CBS May Use Multi-Anchor Format

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES - CBS will probably replace Dan Rather on the evening news with a multi-anchor, perhaps multi-city format that changes the "antiquated" way of reporting the day's top stories, CBS chief Leslie Moonves said Tuesday.

(snip)

He spoke publicly about his search for the first time since Rather announced in late November that he was stepping down from the "CBS Evening News." Moonves stressed that he's still considering all possibilities. It's unclear whether a new format would be ready for when Rather leaves in early March, or whether an interim successor would be named.

(snip)

Asked twice, Moonves wouldn't rule out a role on the evening news for Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, whose "The Daily Show" skewers politicians and the news media each night. Moonves is co-chief executive of Viacom, which owns both CBS and Comedy Central.

10. Perky Katie Couric?????
Oi vey...."Four dead in Iraq today....and look at the puppies! Coming up next, ten ways to increase dietary fiber, after this word from our sponsors!" Gawd hep us awl!

I always liked Carole Simpson on ABC, the rare times I caught her...she always got stuck doing the weekend news, but she was cool, calm, and concise. They should snatch her up--she's got brains, experience, and dare I say, GRAVITAS.

13. Leave Jon Stewart ALONE, dammit..
This is the same tactic that was used on Bill Maher.. ABc "offered" him a "deal he could not refuse"..then once they HAD him under contract, they "de-fanged" him and his show was AWFUL...

By wooing (and possible getting) Jon Stewart, the "plan" is to marginalize him, once they "get" him.. He would be little more than the "new, and improved Andy Rooney"..

Now, if CBS had any sense, they would offer Jon UNLIMITED CONTROL, and give him an HOUR show 2 or 3 times a week (a la "Dateline"...and turn him loose ..

But we all knwo THAT will NEVER happen..

All we would get is Jon, toned down..and no Daily Show.. A Lose-Lose for our side..

24. This is a lot of hooey. Jon Stewart would never do it.
He's stated over and over again that he likes Comedy Central for the freedom they give him and the other writers. He obviously has Viacom's number and knows what they're all about. I don't care how much money they wave at him, he won't do it.

The mention of his name is purely to generate publicity for CBS's real plans. Watch them get someone like Colin Quinn or Dennis Miller to do a "Daily Show"-like commentary segment. They want to get someone who will appear "edgy" without ever once crossing the sacred corporate line.

26. What is wrong people?
What does a role for Stewart mean? It can't actually mean serving as anchor. I can't believe people actually think that is a good idea. Stewart certainly wouldn't. Everyone seems to forget he is a comedian. Not a journalist. This really speaks to the depths to which television news has sunk that this could actually be considered seriously.

Cronkite, Rather, and Jennings worked for years as reporters before they ever took the anchor chair. On network news, the anchor is supposed to be a real journalist, not simply a talking head. What is wrong with us as a country that we expect so little from our news people.

I adore Jon Stewart, but the man is a COMEDIAN.

34. Right, he's a comedian not a newsman.
We have enough blurring of the line between entertainment and news, not to mention, the media control. Let's keep them separate. Stewart is a comic genius and should probably stay on that side of the fence.

Oh, it's on, got to run. My kids turned me on to The Daily Show.

41. that may be true
A lot of people are smart. It doesn't mean they are qualified for all jobs. I have a PhD in history. How would you feel about my performing heart surgery on you? Probably not a good idea. A news anchor needs to be a seasoned and well-trained journalist. Besides, we need Stewart's working as a comedian to keep us sane.

45. Well, that is the whole problem. Based on Jon's performance so far
I'd say he's more of a true journalist that 99% of the supposed journalists in the media. And that's pathetic but it's what we're stuck with.

I mean, another comedian had to write a book (a comical book, no less) about how the right-wing media was full of lies because NOBODY in the mainstream media had bothered to do the research.

So far, I count comedians two, "real" journalists zippo.

35. That's because the younger "reporters" aren't real journalists!
It may be bacause the networks won't let them, but none that I am aware of have the guts to actually tell the truth! They read copy well, but don't seem to know anything about investigative journalism, or actually questioning the validity of a statement made by a politician when it contradicts what he said the week before!

Wether you like him or not, Dan Rather knew how to do his job, and wasn't afraid to clash heads with the powers!

They need multiple anchors so they can support each other.
