Homeless Services Adjust to Closings -WP (meals cancelled dtwn DC)
Street closings for the pomp and partying that will accompany tomorrow's inauguration have prompted nonprofit groups to engage in a different kind of inaugural planning: how to care for the homeless in the downtown area where traffic will be blocked off.

Some groups with feeding programs inside the security zone have canceled meals tomorrow because of the traffic ban, while others are trying to provide regular services to the homeless without running afoul of security regulations.

Social service providers, noting that many homeless men and women sleep along the section of Pennsylvania Avenue NW where tomorrow's parade will be, said they also are making an effort to get those people into shelters because no one will be allowed in that zone as of tonight.

By their fruits, you shall know them.

1. I'm glad someone is trying to take care of them.
This is all so cruel.

Have inaugurals always lasted 3 or 4 days?

5. Bush's Priorities don't include Christian
beliefs. Christ loved and cared for the poor. Bush ignores them and panders to his rich buddies.

7. The Republican Christians have changed everything Jesus
tried to teach us. They cater to the rich with tax cuts and ignore the poor. They obviously do not care if anyone is going hungry and Jesus made sure all were fed. They try to have us believe that what they have done in Iraq is just, and Jesus would be for this war. What's next . . . Jesus pro gun?????

9. I throw it back in their faces
Since when did Jesus believe in pre-emptive strikes, guns, and pandering to the rich while ignoring the poor? I mean it, I throw it right back into their faces.

What have they done to Christ's Golden Rule?

10. i would have thought they would all have been rounded up...
and bussed to somewhere where they wouldn't be an eyesore. or does your president want them to be part of the sights and sounds he wants to experience?

sounds like bad planning to me.

12. I'll bet they ARE going to 'bus' them out...but couldn't say so in WaPo
Since we're all use to 'reading between the lines' to find the Truth:

If the Homeless get hungry enough = they'll board the buses out.

11. Come on, WaPo!! They're REALLY puttin' them on buses and runnin' them
out of town, out of sight for the Inaugural.

Bushco & all the "Christian" moral majority should be forced to see those "without" not only during the Parade, but again and again as they replay this glory day on their Widescreen HDTV's. Homeless should be posted all along the route...so that no one...not even the Networks can block out their reality.

We can send money to aid every starving soul across the globe, yet slam the door in the face of our own needy (many of them Vets).

16. Reuters: Homeless Mostly Invisible as Washington Celebrates
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 08:53 AM by Skinner
...City officials and voluntary agencies are making efforts to get homeless people off the streets and out of the high security zone where inauguration events are taking place.

Most mobile soup kitchens and feeding centers will not be operating within the zone on Thursday, while many shelters are staying open for 24 hours to keep the homeless indoors -- welcome news for the homeless in sub-freezing temperatures.

Like all members of the public without tickets, homeless people are not allowed in the restricted area. But agencies providing food have obtained special clearances to operate their vans in the no traffic zone in the city center.

Alvin Dixon, who earns a few dollars selling "Street Sense," a newspaper written by and about the homeless, said he hoped to boost sales during the inauguration, though not to the Republican loyalists spending thousands of dollars on hotel rooms and thousands more attending glittering balls.

18. Bush, at one of his parties yesterday, said...
"...love a neighbor just like you'd like to be loved yourself. Take time -- (applause) -- take time out of your life to make somebody else's life better. By helping heal a broken heart, or surrounding a friend with love, or feeding the hungry, or providing shelter for the homeless, you can help change America for the better, one heart, one soul, one conscience at a time."

19. Now that's just pitiful. The man is clueless or callous.
Or, perhaps a bit of both. And he is certainly not reality based.

I guess these "christians" forgot to read that part of the Bible.

Deut. 15 : 7
If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.

25. Christians my ass
Jesus said that as you do to the least of these, my brethren, you do to me. This administration has plenty of time to drop the name, but they've systematically shoved the teachings of their "favorite philosopher" aside for years now.

I'm not surprised, of course. But I still find it sad that I could be so unsurprised.
