3. The effect of a 6.9 quake's tsunami
is drastically less than a 9.0. Well, unless it is mega-close....

28. Not necessarily....
the actual seismic event can only be a minor contributor to a tsunami. Other ancillary effects, such as collapses of bathymetry as a result of (a relatively small) seismic shock, can generate much more powerful tsunamis than the seismic event itself.

Reuters

TOKYO (Reuters) - A tsunami warning was issued for a group of islands south of Tokyo after a strong earthquake off Japan's eastern coast on Wednesday, public broadcaster NHK said. A magnitude 6.8 earthquake, the focus of which was about 6.2 miles below the ocean floor in the Pacific Ocean struck at around 3:11 p.m. (1:11 a.m. EST), NHK said.

Tsunami around 20 inches high were expected to hit the Izu islands around 3:30 p.m. (1:30 a.m. EST), it said.

23. It's not a typo

Speaking as one who does occasional work for Japanese earthquake researchers, the Japanese scientific usage of the word "tsunami" refers to any seismically-induced sea wave, not just the giant ones.

That reminds me of a live NHK broadcast of a "tsunami" in Hokkaido a few years ago-- you never would have been able to tell it from a regular wave.

25. Actually, the tsunami that devastated the south asian coast ...
... registered at just a few inches out on the open ocean. It's when it nears land that it begins to grow and become a monster.

13. Excellent update on the tsunami warning, Dcitizen
As I suspected, a 6.9 is nowhere near the intensity of the one that wiped out so many villages and towns along the shores of the Indian Ocean, or the one that destroyed Hilo in 1946.

26. Did anyone get water in their house?
Even in Japan, they're clever enough to build beachfront houses more than two feet above sea level.

The largest was only 5.2, but it makes me wonder just what is
happening in this part of the world right now.

30. The tsunami warning has been lifted.
Tsunami warning lifted after strong earthquake off Japan

January 20, 2005
JAPAN has lifted a tsunami warning it issued for a group of islands south of Tokyo after a strong earthquake off its eastern coast.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency said it had lifted the tsunami warning nearly two hours after a magnitude 6.8 quake, with its focus about 10km below the seabed in the Pacific Ocean.

There were no reports of damage or injuries caused by the quake or tsunami.

Wave surges about 50cm high had been expected to hit the Izu islands at about 3.30pm local time (5.30pm AEDT) yesterday, the agency said. A tsunami 30cm high was later detected on the shore of Miyake Island.

I checked it out since my son is stationed in Japan.
