Former School Admin charged for Allegedly Stealing Retirement Funds
Charges Filed Against Former School Administrator for Allegedly Stealing Retirement Funds

NEW YORK (AP) - A former school administrator was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stealing more than $687,000 from his suburban school district, the latest in a spate of charges aimed at schools officials across Long Island.
Daniel Cifonelli, 70, former assistant superintendent for business in the William Floyd school district about 60 miles east of New York City, was charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing from district insurance accounts and the state teachers' retirement system, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Cifonelli pleaded not guilty and was freed on bail.

Spota said Cifonelli allegedly collected retirement benefits from 1998 to 2001 while also being paid an annual salary to be a consultant with the school district. Investigators found no evidence that Cifonelli's retirement papers had been filed.
