Local Soldier Who Lost Arm and Leg in Iraq Doing "Really, Really Great"

Mark O'Brien figures he'll be back running in a few weeks. Not bad for a guy who lost his right arm and leg just over two months ago.

O'Brien was hit by a rocket propelled grenade while doing a sweep of streets in Ramadi."The explosion was loud," he says. "Everything turned white, I sat back. When I looked down, I saw my femur was sticking out.

"Members of my unit came over and picked me up and sat me on the ground. I didn't want to live because I knew I was going to lose my leg. I was in a lot of pain, but I was more mad at myself that I let this happen."

O'Brien should be able to return to his East Aurora home by this summer. He's looking forward to attending Hilbert College in the fall, and then going on to a career in law enforcement.

I hope Halliburton thanks him for helping maintain their profit line.

1. What? They're not sending him back?
I figured as soon as he could use his artificial limbs, he'd be back on the front lines...after all, we can't have the rich kids and the freepers volunteer for service, and someone has to do the dirty work....

2. Truly! No doubt they want to send him back A.S.A.P. As Rumsfelds says
we want volunteers, no draftees, as draftees just don't apply themselves the same. They don't hold up in war.

Besides, we need to keep the rich kids safe, or off in Champagne Brigades like W., to protect our future stock of "leaders."

If he does what they want, he'll be back out there before they have to reduce his medical benefits again.

5. Gee, can I get my leg and arm blown off too?
This guy makes it sound like such fun ("doing really, really great").

Things will change for him when
1) the drugs wear off and
2) the money they paid him to say this stuff gets spent.

Saigon68, you believe he really means one word of this? Anyone else believe it? Didn't think so. People around here are smarter than that.

So why do the newspapers publish this crap?

6. Good for him.
I hope he's going to continue to get the help he needs for the best recovery possible. Long road ahead.

7. career in law enforcement
Poor guy. Law enforcement will not hire this guy for any patrol job. He might get some type of desk job or possibly work in the science lab of an agency. My old dept had a detective who lost an arm but he lost it on duty and they kept him because it was cheaper to pay him this way then to settle a workers comp settlement.

Wish him luck though.
