California executes double murderer

SAN QUENTIN, Calif., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- California executed a 61-year-old man early Wednesday who had confessed 24 years ago to murdering two women, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Donald Beardsley was given a lethal injection at San Quentin Prison as about 300 opponents of the death penalty kept vigil outside the prison.

It was the state's 11th execution since voters reinstated the death penalty in 1978 and the first under the Republican administration of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Nothing in his petition or the record of his case convinces me that he did not understand the gravity of his actions or that these heinous murders were wrong," Schwarzenegger wrote in his last-minute denial of clemency.
