Air Pollution Battle Heats Up
Air Pollution Battle Heats Up

(CBS/AP) While an internal government report says current health standards that limit the amount of soot in the air aren't sufficient, big business and environmentalists are at odds over whether to toughen those rules.

The draft report by the Environmental Protection Agency staff says rules adopted in 1997 do not adequately protect the elderly and people with respiratory problems and should be tightened.

The findings could become the basis for additional pollution-control requirements to reduce the amount of microscopic soot emitted by diesel-burning trucks, cars, factories and power plants.

1. Fat chance.
Diesel emission controls were killed off during Clinton's reign-- there's no chance with this guy.

Whitman was one of the leaders of the suit against Midwest power plants and mills dumping acid rain and smog here on the East coast, and she was told to forget about that when she got to the EPA.

No chance of cleaner air under Shrub.

2. Delays
The Clear Skies Initiative (CSI), sometimes refered to as Dark Skies or Clear Lies, will delay the implementation of any type of real pollution controls until 2010. Full implementation will not be completed until 2020. For those of us with air quality problems (mostly in the blue states), this means another 20 years of exposure to poor air quality.
