AP: Health cuts loom; Florida desperately seeks to slow budget growth
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - For thousands in Florida, the wrangling over the state budget that began this week is more than just a dull government exercise.

For people in nursing homes, it could be a question of having another staffer on hand, or a few extras like new bedding or entertainment paid for by the home to ease the daily boredom.

For Tiffany Reid, a 32-year-old Bradenton mother of three fighting cystic fibrosis since birth and awaiting an organ transplant, it could decide whether she gets a life-lengthening new lung.

Reid is one of about 36,000 Floridians who can only get health care through the Medically Needy program, which provides coverage for people ineligible for Medicaid, who because of chronic or catastrophic illnesses can't get private insurance.
