Defiant Iran says it will resist US
good for them ....this is a neocon invasion strategy ...

20jan05

IRAN has acquired a strong military capability and will resist any attacks against it, Defence Minister Ali Shamkhani said.

Mr Shamkhani told a technology conference Iran did not fear the US, which has already toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

1. Who'd we topple? I thought we were still fighting tooth and nail in both
countries. Oh well, stupid me. I don't call it 'toppled' until the last gunshot sounds. Or the last c-4 bomb detonates. Or whatever.

2. Iraq said the same thing...
And they were right (considering the level of resistance)! However, the US may bomb Iran, but surely an invasion will be the equivalent of Hitler invading Russia (in terms of overstretch)

Ingrates that they are. Why can't they just realize that they're not fighting for their freedom? (sarcasm)

...into the Persian Gulf to bomb Iran. That's probably going to cost a good five thousand American lives.

Iran is reported to have many Russian made sunburn anti-ship cruise missiles based in the hills on the eastern side of the gulf. The sunburn, SS-n22 (I think that's our designation for it) is a Mach 1.9 missile and the newer SS-n25 Onyx is Mach 2.9. Both move so fast that nothing we have can catch them even if they are spotted, which is unlikely. They also both perform such violent end maneuvers that the close in support phalanx gun can't track them. They are reportedly so fast and heavy that their 750 lb warhead will penetrate the armor on a carrier and delay exploding until reaching the center of the ship. One of these things is capable of destroying a carrier. That's five thousand men lost in just a few seconds.

And almost the entire gulf is within range of these ship killers.

Thanks George.

Who wants to bet that if we lost a carrier and it's full complement, the American sheeple's anger won't be directed at Boy George, but at Iran.

God Save America.

13. You're right, and it won't bother Bush/PNAC one bit.
If they get their way with Iran without losing too many U.S. troops they will consider it a success. But if they lost lots of U.S. troops (fungible things, those), they will just consider it as cementing the political support for further wars of aggression. Like you say, the fact that the U.S. attacked first will quickly be lost in the heat of emotion if another country has the nerve to actually win a battle or two.

Bush would love to get the chance to use mini-nukes, and five or ten thousand dead sailors would give him the cover to do that probably. Then, who knows what Hell would be unleashed.

10. This is getting a bit too "Iraqish" for my tastes...
...It's almost as though these anal-dwelling ass clowns really think they can pull it off.

11. Amen to that.
They have such a successful track record! Look at Afghanistan. We turned that country into rubble. And how about Iraq. It's descending into a Dante's Inferno; a bloody civil war which will probably doom hundreds of thousands more Iraqi civilians, and many more US troops.

You go, George. And where are you going to get the troops? I know armaments will not be a problem. But......troops. Well, that's another thing now isn't it. (We've already lost about 10% of our fighting force from Iraq -- over 1,330 dead, and over 10,000 maimed and wounded).

12. have seen it coming
As a former resident of Iran (1970-71)... if they think they are up to their eyeballs in alligators, just wait for the reception the Neos will get in Iran. Iran/Persia is a very ancient Country, unlike Iraq which was invented after WWI. They have a large population, and although they dislike the mullahs, they really get bent when outsiders try messing with their country. And they will fight to the last person to defend the place. Add to that: high desert plateau (4000'+) for most of the area, incredibly rugged mountains way above tree level, and huge semi-inhabited deserts. As far as I know, no outside force has been able to invade and hold Persia for long. Factor in Sunburn missiles...GWCo are nutter than a Christmas fruitcake if they think they can have any long-term effect...even the CIA eventually lost their man.
