Some Dems Plan to Avoid Bush Inauguration
...Ignoring the pomp and ceremony surrounding the inauguration is one way to avoid facing the hard truth. Terry McAuliffe, the outgoing chairman of the Democratic National Committee, says he will be at home watching the movie "Titanic."

"To get me in the mood for the second Bush administration," McAuliffe says.
...
Some Democrats, however, can't stay away from the politics of the moment. Aides say John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and Kerry's running mate in 2004, will be home in Georgetown with his family but plans to watch the inaugural on television.

Those seeking to lead the party as its new chairman are staying busy. Howard Dean, the former presidential candidate, plans a series of house parties his aides are calling the "Un-nauguration." Activists Simon Rosenberg and former Rep. Martin Frost will be traveling the country campaigning for the post and raising money.

3. Titanic...
I suppose McAuliffe wants to get a feel for the coming of the real sinking of the ship! Just hope we're not on her when she's heading down.

Movie Summaries

The American President (1995)
As President, Andrew Shepherd (Douglas) is immensely popular (he has a 63% approval rating). As a man, he's a lonely father struggling to raise a daughter. His struggles multiply when his romance with lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Bening) becomes fodder for both the press and a rival senator (Richard Dreyfuss)---precipitating a rapid drop in the polls.

Dave (1993)
Bill Mitchell is the philandering and distant President of the United States. Dave Kovic is a sweet-natured and caring Temp Agency operator, who by a staggering coincidence looks exactly like the President. As such, when Mitchell wants to escape an official luncheon, the Secret Service hires Dave to stand in for him. Unfortunately, Mitchell suffers a severe stroke whilst having sex with one of his aides, and Dave finds himself stuck in the role indefinitely. The corrupt and manipulative Chief of Staff, Bob Alexander, plans to use Dave to elevate himself to the White House - but unfortunately, he doesn't count on Dave enjoying himself in office, using his luck to make the country a better place, and falling in love with the beautiful First Lady...

9. I agree, he's a real good guy
and was a good DNC chair. I just hope we can do better than him and that's a compliment to him as well.

11. Did anyone else notice that this "party" cost more than our initial pledge
I find it rather interesting that Bush's little party cost $40 million, which they've obviously been planning for some time, contrasted with the initial $15 million pledge to tsunami countries. I guess it was more important to crunch the numbers for how many fancy things he needed.

I know its not really fair to say that all of the money was "spent" for the inauguration, but one would think that people could find a few better things to do with a few million dollars.

"Dec 27, 2004 — WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States expects to provide an initial $15 million in aid for victims of a devastating tsunami in Asia and has already released $400,000, a top U.S. aid official said on Monday. "It's anticipated that we'll add — at least immediately — another probably $10 million for a total of about $15 million in our initial response to this tragedy," Fox said."

"After the fireworks, the Bushes and Cheneys were the guests of honor at three “candlelight dinners” for the biggest donors to the inauguration, which was expected to cost more than $40 million."
