NYT: Conservatives Pick Soft Target: A Cartoon Sponge (Bob SquarePants)
Conservatives Pick Soft Target: A Cartoon Sponge
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Published: January 20, 2005

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 - On the heels of electoral victories barring same-sex marriage, some influential conservative Christian groups are turning their attention to a new target: the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants.

"Does anybody here know SpongeBob?" Dr. James C. Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, asked the guests Tuesday night at a black-tie dinner for members of Congress and political allies to celebrate the election results.

SpongeBob needed no introduction. In addition to his popularity among children, who watch his cartoon show, he has become a well-known camp figure among adult gay men, perhaps because he holds hands with his animated sidekick Patrick and likes to watch the imaginary television show "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy."

Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "pro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. The makers of the video, he said, planned to mail it to thousands of elementary schools to promote a "tolerance pledge" that includes tolerance for differences of "sexual identity."

The video's creator, Nile Rodgers, who wrote the disco hit "We Are Family," said Mr. Dobson's objection stemmed from a misunderstanding. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site....

40. And the subject of an ADORING NPR profile
earlier this week, on All Things Considered.

I've always contributed to my local NPR affiliate, but I'm very close to dropping them, after hearing that disgusting piece.

(I'll probably continue to support them, but my check will be with a very detailed description of the alarming rightward turn their syndicated programs have taken of late, come Spring's pledge drive.)

45. Don't continue contributing to
NPR...if you write a letter but yet enclose a check all they will care about is the check and its size. Instead, during this Spring's beg for money drive, send them a letter with an explanation that you have chosen to donate to a community radio station (in St Louis the local community radio station, KDHX, airs Democracy Now! and is more worthy of money than NPR). Even if you don't have a local community radio station, donate to any Pacifica station. They stream over the Internet and have many fine programs that take a truly critical view of this current (mis)administration.

55. I'll consider that advice. BTW, i first contributed to Pacifica
when I was in my mid-teens, in the 70s. WBAI-FM, NYC.

I can still remember their pledgeline's phone number, too. gawd, if I could only remember the stuff I'm supposed to recall on a nanosecond's notice... but I digress.

In southern Arizona it is KXCI 91.3 FM Tucson, kxci.org, 520-623-1000. They are doing a pledge drive RIGHT NOW. (and become a member so you can vote in upcoming elections. - I am running for a seat on the board - vote for ME!)

167. AGREED! Not one penny more to right wing NPR.
Their era has come and gone. Today, you're supporting Bushism by underwriting the CPB.

It's easy. Want to help open-minded radio? Give to a good local non-NPR affiliate. Or simply give to Pacifica instead.

Looking for a good NPR alternative to listen to for radio news? DemocracyNow.org is far better in several respects: perspective, acumen, historical awareness, independence of thought. You can also download the daily show in mp3 form--load it up on your iPod for the commute. :-)

106. Perhaps instead of giving to NPR ...
if you are in or near Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York you can send your money to a Pacifica (http://www.pacifica.org) Station instead. They are entirely listener sponsored and you won't be disappointed. If you are not in those areas I would encourage you to listen to http://www.kpft.org - 90.1 in Houston, Texas to hear Flashpoints, Democracy Now, Cultural Baggage and many other great progressive radio programs sponsored by the great progressive listeners.

131. I've given to pacifica in the past. might again.
I've supported listener sponsored radio for ages. Longtime sponsor of my old NJ hangout, available online at http://www.wfmu.org -- and I'd once sponsored NYC's WBAI.

But here in MetroLanta, it's a different set of stations. The NPR affiliate is almost a lone voice of reasonably objective news. (Yes, we have an AA affiliate, but it's a very weak station and only reachable intermittantly.) However, there are some pretty good, powerful college stations, so at least there's a decent music mix.

79. You mean Sandy CHEEKS?
(That's her last name, you know.) Tsk. Obvious attempts to foul our Precious Bodily Fluids with off-color references that are going to curve our spine, fry our brains, and lose the war for the allies.

But, you see, Sandy is (if you've listened to her) apparently Texan (or at least southern, as in the episode where she's hibernating and constantly refers to herself "gittin' Dirty Dan"), and lives in a bubble since she wouldn't survive outside in the natural local elements -- so perhaps she represents dubya to the citizens of Bikini Bottom (that name! ANOTHER attempt to inject sexual overtones into our national Purity of Essense!).

Or maybe her overt expressions of her prowess at karate, and other MANLY-MAN pastimes, are intended to surreptitiously convey that Sandy is, in fact, lesbian? (And we certainly won't go into the revealing bathing suit she wears while safely in her "bubble"!)

Or maybe it's the attempt to "slip" MermaidMan under the radar by having his voice done by Ernest Borgnine (of all people -- do you think he knows his voice is being used to advance the Gay Agenda?).

And who is this "Mr. Lawrence" who is credited as having co-written several SpongeBob episodes? Everyone ELSE has a first name (except Mr. Krab, who I'm starting to wonder about). What's the deal with this "Mr." not having a first name?

I would assume that the good people at Liberty University, Bob Jones University, and Oral Roberts University are looking VERY CLOSELY into this subversion of Murkan youth.

Or maybe Dr. Dobson is kind of a nut case.

It's really the hidden nefarious asexual agenda that's being promoted, in one episode of spongebob he actually produces Gemmmules of himself. Now kids are going to want to practice this degenerate from of reproduction! ;) (sarcasm)

these types of conservative so-called "pro-family" groups, we are
dealing with morons--and I mean that literally. They are too stupid to realize that not only are these creatures asexual, but THEY'RE CARTOONS.

What they actually fear is that someone or something will undo all of their careful brainwashing of their kids so that they believe that
hatred and intolerance are family values. Morons, I say!

What a tempest in a teacup.

Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 09:46 PM by foo_bar
http://www.vsf.cape.com/~jdale/science/reproduction.htm

Male and female starfish are not distinguishable from the outside; you need to see the gonads or be lucky enough to catch them spawning.

Lucky if you're an invertebrate voyeur. Starfish are capable of asexual reproduction, but they aren't asexual per se on account of the gonads. Just wanted to set the record straight on this issue of burning importance to our divided nation.

142. Exactly!
WTF do these wingnuts want?!

Spongebob, if I were to attach REAL human characteristics to a CARTOON, is a hard-working, helpful employee, a loyal friend and a caring and concerned neighbor. Isn't that what Christians SHOULD be doing?

Geez... his sexual orientation has NEVER entered my mind - nor the mind of my 5-year-old (DUH!).

This is a bunch of craziness!

It's like the purple Telly-Tubbie. There was a myriad of reasons I wouldn't let my child watch that show (their lack of language abilities being the main reason. I wanted my son NOT to speak gibberish), but the purple Telly-Tubbie being maybe "gay" wasn't one of them!

And Dobson's gaydar must have pinged pretty loud when SpongeBob turned up. After all, he lives in a pineapple under the sea -- AND he's absorbent and yellow and porous, too. So he definitely must be gay.

I do have to admit that I find some interesting innuendo in that cartoon, but I have to also say that the idea of quelling tolerance is just bullshit. Do these guys WANT to deal with getting the most popular cartoon today pulled off the shelves? Do they want to fight the cash cow?

In my experience, this supposed messaging that is turning our kids gay is not something I could even pick up on until I got to be about 16 years old. Maybe I'm an innocent, but I just think that people make their own choices.

14. One of my favorite TV soliloquies...
"No, I know I'm alone on this. I know the vast majority of people consider Jerry Falwell a spiritual pillar of great and gentle wisdom. I know that most people consider him a scholarly and tolerant man who would never judge others harshly just because they were different. I know that most people find his calm leadership to be a gentle soothing beacon in a time of great social chaos. His guidance, for instance, on the great purple Tellytubby matter, was fraught with the kind of theological sophistication that only Jerry Falwell and a cafeteria full of sixth graders could devise. I know I'm going way out on a limb, but I think Jerry Falwell's a fat-ass. Who did I just offend? I'm eager to talk to them. I've got a typewriter and I'll use it as I see fit."

Casey McCall on Sports Night.

I wonder if these people watch old Warner cartoons and think Bugs Bunny is gay or otherwise "messed up" because he dresses up like a woman to get to Elmer. "What's Opera, Doc?" is a classic, but people like these probably want it banned because Bugs dresses up as Brunhilde.

With all the problems in the world, THIS is what these people find time to bitch about?

My husband and I loved that show, but apparently, that's what it takes to kill a show--for us to like it. We're in the right demographics, but we never seem to like the right shows. Like my personal favorite, Wonderfalls, all the good ones have to get cancelled.

Btw, "Dr." James Dobson, Ph.D (not MD, even though he never corrects anyone on that), is a total jerk. He's messed up millions of kids all over this country--I went to college with a lot of them. Trust me: he's worse than any of the others. We need to fight him!

I can tell you from experience it doesn't work--add to the problem, actually. Now, I knew from someone's class report in a college class that his doctorate was really in sociology, and when a woman caller thanked him for being a "good, Christian doctor helping everybody," I was curious to see what his answer would be. He never corrected her. Not even a bit. He even paused a second or two before going on, so he had time to say something like, "My degree is in sociology, Madam, not medicine, but I'm glad to have helped." Nope.

He's such a jerk.

Now it is Sponge Bob. Those ambiguously gay childrens shows, what is the world coming to. It is a good thing parents like me only let my children watch wholesome content like the Simpsons, or the OC, or Malcolm in the Middle. I am glad that Mr. Dobson is looking out for me and my values, I can't stand it when my children are tolerant.

In all seriousness, Mr. Rodgers this did not stem from a misunderstanding. This is the point and purpose of his assault on you and your cartoon. Mr. Dobson hates tolerance and anything that has to do with it so you are going to be persecuted by him and his ilk. They are trying to impose their Christian, southern values on you. I hate Abraham Lincoln more everyday, if he just let the south leave back in the 1860's imagine how nice the country would be.

33. Yup--it's the inevitable conservative overstretch...
They view life in black and white so compromise is impossible. Their power and control are very high but much lower than they presume so they will overreach for the next four years and the next Republican nominee will be forced to go along with it because social conservatives now own the party. Either the Republican establishment will get Giuliani, Schwarzenegger or McCain nominated and social conservatives will run a third-party candidate or they will nominate an unelectable right-wing nutjob who will be unelectable because of the next four years of overreach.

I guy can dream...

The Church of the Nazarene does believe in faith-healing (usually in a more controlled atmosphere and part of a larger service), but they don't believe in holy water, per se. They are evangelical Christians in the Wesleyan tradition, if that helps.

The Nazarenes are a little further to the right on that kind of stuff. They used to be known as Holy Rollers (you know, running the aisles, waving the hankies, stuff like that), but they've stopped most of that in the last twenty years or so. They still do faith healings, though.

49. They are using the fake "gay" thing-they really object to "community"
I hear it all the time on RW talk radio. See they had miserable unloving fathers who were cruel to them to teach them about life (the father's life) and/or to beat them into thinking a certain way*. The "gay" thing is just a marketing device to get everyone who already agrees with them to read what they have to say. It really is about not loving your fellow man and they don't want people to get along-anger and fear are the top of their product line.

*there was a 3 day rage fest on Hannity several months ago having to do with some opinions expressed by an 18 year old girl from Montana. She had some pretty way left ideas and after she spent most of one show on the phone with Hannity the next day he had her father on and berated the guy for allowing his daughter to have these ideals. The father just said ~"Hey she has to figure these things out by herself. At least she has an opinion and is well read on it". The rest of that show and the next day were callers (mostly men) testifying to how horribly their father treated them and what it taught them about the world and people in general (nice huh?) AND how horrible the father was for not BEATING the RIGHT ideals into her. ----I'm not joking it really was that bad.

Last night, before bed, I read my two children, "Hands Off!". This SpongeBob book details Sponge Bob's obsession with his new toy...a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy BUBBLE BLOWER.

Last week, we watched a SpongeBob episode in which Patrick and Spongebob discover Sandy the Squirrel hibernating. To keep warm, Sponge Bob and Patrick remove sleeping-Sandy's fur, "This mustache and goatee combo works like a charm!"

I'm wondering--how do I surrender myself to authorities?

Now, the Gargoyles? There's some homo-erotica into which one can really sink one's teeth, so to speak.

Sponge Bob goes to a big tent revival meeting.

a person could get there self in as much trouble as Sponge Bob gets into!

75. We interrupt regularly scheduled programming...
...for this advice to "Dr." Dobson:

I'll talk very slowly so you'll understand... O.K.?

Find your television remote control. (Assuming you know what that is.)
On it you will find a series of numbers. (Assuming you know what those
are.)
Press almost any of those numbers and it will take you somewhere else.

This has been a public service announcement...

Prag thanks you for your attention.

We now return to regularly scheduled programming.

In my mind this reaction is a continuation of the hatred and mistrust of Hollywood by the right wingers. They don't want ANY liberal messages getting out - including toleration. Heavens to Betsy they *have* to have someone and something to hate.

The real question in my mind is what are they all REALLY afraid of?

107. If you ever really want to die laughing....
...see if you can find a book called "Turmoil in the Toy Box." It's from the mid-80's, that heyday of the world's greatest cartoons, when some wacko Christian group went to great pains to find demonic messages in every single popular kids' show of the time. From He-Man (use of sorcery ... eeeeevil!) to the Transformers (shape-shifting characters undermine kids' sense of stability in the world) and everything in between, this is about as hysterical a book as you'll ever read.

Sadly (or perhaps not-so-sadly), the original is out of print, but there's a re-printed version that you can see here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0914984209/ref=lpr_g_1/002-2894882-8588049?v=glance&s=books

What's really scary are the Amazon reviews by parents who are essentially saying, "Amen, sister!" Or maybe they're just being sarcastic. One would like to hope....

There are the Christians who actually follow the principals of life Jesus talked about. THey are the ones you find here on the DU board, the Democratic party and other liberal groups that protest against *

and then there are the Bushies who really aren't Christians, they just use the name Jesus and God to convince people that hatred, homophobia and global dominance is somehow found in the pages of the Bible.

187. Yep...
Some of us interpert Jesus' teaching of love everyone as literally LOVE EVERYONE. Or, judge not lest ye be judge as DON'T JUDGE PEOPLE!!!! The same kind of radical, peace-loving ideas you find in every religion in the world (since they really are all connected anyway. Christianity is merely one interpertation of the universal message of peace.)

But hey, that's only one interpertation. I'm sure in there somewhere must be a message of take all you can steal and kill everyone in sight who is different from you. Right?
;)

The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity.

162. I KNOW THIS FIRSTHAND . . .
as Dobson is a member of the Church of the Nazarene and I grew up in that church. I'm still in therapy after all these years. Imagine being gay, or 'pre-gay' if you will, and facing this barage of hate and intolerance all done in the name of a loving God. My much older brother, who is a minister, tried to exorcise the 'gay demon' from me. In retrospect it's all so humiliating.

I can remember the dread of Sunday night church services as they were more 'evangelical' and drew upon bringing people who were 'lost' into the fold. There was always the threat of hellfire.
Even as a very young child I remember asking my Mother if "the devil was going to get me." Later, in adolescence, I had an emotional breakdown and told my parents I feared being gay. They sent me to a psychiatrist.

Sometimes the old tapes still play in my head and I wonder if I really will go to hell. There is something called religious/spiritual abuse. Maybe we should be rescuing these children from the living hell in which they're being raised. But how?

What could be less Christ-like than the barrage of hatred you've experienced? It can't be countered with more hatred, and it will require twice as much loving energy to put an end to the cruelty.

I appreciate your kind sentiment. You're correct. It is love that has helped me conquer some of the worst fears and the memories of the nightmarish experiences. Every time someone reminds me of how insane that way of thinking is, I feel loved and valued instead of hated and devalued. I just wish no child had to be exposed to that kind of extremism, but then again, I wish no child was a victim of war or a tsunami. We learn and grow from all this, no matter how difficult or painful.

198. That's exactly why we must continue to fight the bigotry
that pervades our country these days. We have to continue fighting their efforts to ban gay marriage and do everything we can to support legislation that will protect the GLBT community from discrimination.

At home, we can start teaching our children tolerance by being tolerant of them. I've made it plain to my two boys that the person they choose to spend their lives with will be welcomed and loved as a daughter or another son. We can stand up to those who are openly bigoted by expressing our support for our gay friends and relatives.

And when those who purport to be Christian speak out against our gay and lesbian friends, we can let them know that we'll pray for them to overcome their hatefulness.

Since you experienced bigotry as a child, you're more sensitive than most to the effect it has on children. It sounds like you have a calling within you to help kids who are suffering now. Maybe your therapist has some ideas to help you get involved. Maybe helping to heal others would help you heal yourself.

193. You're not going to hell...
... unless of course you voted for * (just kidding!)

Listen, those people simply don't get it. The whole concpet that Jesus was trying to teach people was peace and love. The dude was the orginally hippy! And coming from a Christian who gets that message and also sees it in all the other world religions, I truly feel that unless you are secretly an ax murderer, being gay or not has nothing to do with where your soul will be spending eternity.

Wouldn't it be cool if there was like a liberla heaven where all people who just want peace get to go and then a conservative neo-con Heaven for people who like to kill and blow people up? Our heaven would be beautiful, trees, blue skies, everyone just hanging out, having a blast, while "their" Heaven, they are constantly running from bombs and living in a war-torn world? That would be the coolest!

202. Are you from WV?
I had an ex-boyfriend whose family members likewise tried to exorcise the gay demon once they realized that his best friend was more than a friend -- drove six hours to out the BF to his parents. Fortunately, the BF's parents just looked at them like they were insane and told them they didn't give a shit who he was sleeping with, that he was their son and loved him nonetheless, then slammed the door in their face.

But I hear you -- every once in a while when someone suddenly isn't where they're supposed to be, I get the start of those panic attacks about the Rapture that I had when I was 12.

165. and now, on a serious note
Dobson is saying something that appears to be untrue and which could affect the profitability of whoever makes Spongebob.
Isn't there some way to sue? Has he ever attacked a commercial entity this way before?

166. Again, I stress that this is good news...
Every time our reactionary masters sink their fangs into the popular culture, it's good news, and I cheer.

The more they seek to crush our hopes and pleasures, the more I urge them to bring it on.

Because repression breeds response. :-)

We're not going to throw off the Bush Reich through rational argument, or unglue its sickly aura from the hearts of the many dullards who back Bushism.

Only when people are well and fucking sick of socially-repressive reactionary Christian control are they going to say, Enough.

So, keep trying, right wing lunkheads. You're our best advertisement. ;-)

177. dobson disappoints me
I grew up listening to this man, my mom knew him. I have many good memories surrounding him and his ministry UNTIL I hear one of his radio shows and he talked about Catholics and other denominations not going to Heaven.
I really wish folks followed the example of Jesus, instead of giving into such paranoid crap.
Jesus said nothing outside you can make you unclean. A cartoon show doesn't corrupt people, any corruption comes from within.
Spongebob Squarepants is a good kids show. It's one I allow my children to watch because of the GOOD values it has.

lets not actually kill them. Really, we don't need to make myrters out of these people.

Everyday, more than anything else, I pray that * lives because if that a-hold dies, be it by an assassin's bullet or a freakin' Rold's Gold pretzle, they will make a Reagan-esq myrter out of this terrorist.

..."What reaction can one have except for gales of hysterical laughter at these people's wrongheadedness and irrational thinking?" Kenny asked. "I love it. I'm glad these people are around because with the coronation going on, we all need something to laugh about."...

at http://www.wearefamilyfoundation.org/ with the following note:

I just saw your video on Countdown and I enjoyed it very much. I have sent you a small donation. Dr. James Dobson and anyone who thinks that there is something inappropriate in the video is, frankly, delusional.

192. From the NYT article:
"Mark Barondess, the foundation's lawyer, said the critics "need medication.""

I can't understand why he'd say that...

"On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation.

"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch.""

It sounds to me as if they've had way too many meds as it is. I thought they might want to share with the rest of us. Greedy.

201. My letter to Dr. James C. Dobson and the AFA
Dear Dr. James C. Dobson and the friendly family folks at the American Family Association,

I read with GREAT interest about your anti-homosexual campaign against SpongeBob Squarepants. I always thought there was something FISHY about that sponge and starfish actually HOLDING HANDS!

And Spongebob watches the imaginary television show, "The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." That's a sign of gaydom, if there ever was one!

While you're on this campaign, I recommend that you look into Batman and Robin. They are grown men living together. That's VERY suspicious!

Also, review The Three Stooges. Moe, Larry and Curly even sometimes sleep together in the VERY same bed! And BOY, do they make the noise! They pretend to be snoring, but WE know better, don’t we?

Then, review those Teletubbies – oh, wait, I think you already deemed at least one of THEM to be gay!

And what about Wally and the Beav sharing a room? Sure, they're young, but that's where homosexuality starts, right?

In conclusion, I'm glad you have so much TIME, what with all the other pressing PROBLEMS in our lives, to work to keep our kids from seeing these anti-family cartoons.

I know I sleep better knowing you lose sleep thinking about perverted acts like sponge-on-starfish sex!

Sincerely yours for families against perverted cartoons,

Jackson Thoreau
