BAGHDAD - US troops launched fresh raids on Thursday around the northern city of Mosul to rein in guerillas who have threatened to disrupt the upcoming election. Iraqi forces sealed off main routes into Baghdad one day after a wave of car bombings rocked the capital.

Troops from the Army’s Stryker Brigade Combat Team detained nine people and seized weapons in the overnight sweeps in Mosul, the military said Thursday.

US forces have intensified nighttime operations in Iraq’s third largest city in a race to make it safe enough for voters to cast ballots in the country’s Jan. 30 parliamentary and regional elections. In the past two weeks alone, US and Iraqi forces have rounded up 200 suspected insurgents there, the US military said.

A surge in car bombings and street clashes in the city have followed November’s devastating US offensive in the former insurgent hub of Fallujah, and US commanders believe many rebel fighters who fled that siege have set up new operations in Mosul and other cities

I think any deaths or bad news will be delayed several days, so as to not cast a pall on the chimpnauguration.

Mr Bush recently asked Mr Powell for his view on the progress
of the war. "We're losing," Mr Powell was quoted as saying.
Mr Freeman said Mr Bush then asked the secretary of state
to leave.

In order to survive, Bush must become more of a moron.

And Cheney must become more of the president.

The Maestro
The most important revelation made about the 9/11 war
games comes again from Major Don Arias of NORAD.
With multiple war games running, there had to be
someone coordinating them.

"Yes, there is an exercise maestro," said Don Arias in a
phone interview. 26

Mr Powell said there must be Sunni representation in the government to be formed after the elections. This reflects US efforts to persuade the main parties of the Shia majority, who are expected to sweep the polls, to co-opt members of the Sunni minority into the administration and the drafting of the constitution.

US leverage rests upon awareness among the Shia that their government is unlikely to survive a civil war without continued US military support.

High anxiety over the elections is also evident among Arab allies of the US. Karim Kawar, Jordan's ambassador to Washington, said that he feared that elections without solid Sunni participation would lead to an "Islamic republic of Iraq".

"That's not what the American taxpayers hoped for," he said.

Charles Boyd, a former general who had opposed the war, said he was dismayed at the administration's lack of commitment in fighting it.

"Our government is not mobilised for war of this size and complexity. We are acting on a 'business as usual' format," he said.

Look at the "royalty" on the DC podiums today
and think of Nuremburg.

Know that there will be a day of reckoning.

Aljazeera also learned that US forces took over al-
Salam hospital in the northern Iraqi province of Mosul to use
as a military headquarters after driving out all patients
and medical
staff.

The seven-storey building is the city's biggest hospital.

8. "The March of Folly" is what I think of.
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 10:15 AM by bemildred
I sure wish Barbara Tuchman was still around to document this.

Taking over the hospital seems like deja vu all over again.

I keep wondering when the dam is finally going to crack, these
morons will never correct their course, we'll have to have the
full collapse and retreat to Kuwait under fire. How many more of
our troops must kill and be killed and maimed for this feckless
folly? Instead of a graceful decline in the American Empire leading
to some sort of growing world order we are going to be left standing
in a pile of polluted rubble, the mockery of the World raining down
on us, and a fundamentalist (notice the word "mental" embedded in that)
insurgency running amok in the hinterlands.

10. March of Folly an excellent book
and don't forget the Guns of August where
Ms Tuchman describes the origin of
the word "terrorist"-Germany describing Belgians
who nonsensically were attacking them as
the Kaiser's Army was moving thru Belgium.
