Cheney Thought Iraq Would Recover Quickly
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=544&u=/ap/20050120/ap_on_go_pr_wh/inaugural_cheney_1&printer=1

Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said Thursday that he overestimated the pace of Iraq (news - web sites)'s recovery from the U.S.-led invasion because he didn't realize the lasting devastation wrought by Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) on his people after the first Gulf War (news - web sites).

Asked to name his mistakes in planning the war in Iraq, Cheney said he had not anticipated how long it would take the Iraqis to begin running their own country. Not until after Saddam was ousted did the United States realize the extent of the Iraqi leader's brutality in putting down revolt in 1991, Cheney said.

"I think the hundreds of thousands of people who were slaughtered at the time, including anybody who had the gumption to stand up and challenge him, made the situation tougher than I would have thought," he said on "The Don Imus Show" on the radio.

"I would chalk that one up as a miscalculation, where I thought things would have recovered more quickly," Cheney said.

Can't blame Clinton so let's blame Saddam! Everybody but the Bush cabal.

..then the US is just gonna keep corkscrewing into the ground.

If the Bush administration had some sort of interaction with reality, we'd have half a chance of salvaging our country's future, but they don't. So we don't.

6. Wow!!! He's spinning like a top!!!!
It's difficult to wrap your brain around this one:

Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said Thursday that he overestimated the pace of Iraq (news - web sites)'s recovery from the U.S.-led invasion because he didn't realize the lasting devastation wrought by Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) on his people after the first Gulf War

It really takes balls of steel to go to the media and pop that one, specially after we have been occupying Iraq for 2 years now and things are worse than they were before. Amazing.

42. Spinning, yes
"Balls of steel" I'm not sure. Arrogance, an obvious belief in the stupidity of the american people (which he certainly has reason to have), and a nice safe bunker are what allow him to say things like that.

Yup it's all Saddam's fault.

The sad part is that a lot of people will believe this, repeat it, and use it as part of their logic. It's so patently outrageous, that hopefully any semi-intelligent * voters (if indeed, there are any), will see that it doesn't quite add up. I'm not sure if he scares me more when he talks, or when he's quiet, all I know is he scares me a LOT.

Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 10:54 AM by KC21304
In one of his recent interviews while, as usual, not answering the direct question of why they were so wrong on planning for the war, Bush said, ( paraphrasing ) that is what happens in war. Somethings you don't think will happen do and somethings you plan for don't.

Well, what he likes to bring up as not happening is refugees pouring in and starvation. When will someone with a brain tell him that the reason it didn't happen is because Iraq was not as bad off as we were led to believe. And this is exactly contrary to the bullshit we heard from Cheney today.

23. SPIN LIES SPIN LIES SPIN LIES SPIN LIES SPIN
Cheney knew damn well how reconstruction and occupation would proceed. He is trying to spin it as some kind of mistake when it is really intentional warmongering and war profiteering. Qualified experts like General Shinseki told Cheney & Co. the high costs in manpower and money this invasion would cause. Bush/Cheney KNEW QUITE WELL what would happen and NONE of the Iraq quagmire is a surprise to them. Cheney is cunning and is trying it make it look like an honest mistake. BULLSHIT !

After the sham elections, US military focus will shift to securing oil facilities. Security in the streets will be the responsibility of the "free Iraqi" police. Chaos will reign in Iraq but the oil will flow to fund the war profiteering reconstruction.

24. yeah. I hate like hell to admit this, but I'm starting to sympathize
with the view that Cheney and his monkey intended for Iraq to be ungovernable, deliberately Cheneyed things (not enough occupying troops, glacial training programs, disbanding the army) to ensure that our presence would be permanent.

Really, I didn't used to feel that way, but it's starting to make a lot more sense now.

25. Oh Yeah, The Lasting Devastation.
Like Falluja.

City Of Ghosts

<SNIP>
The American soldiers at the checkpoint were nervous. The approach to the checkpoint was covered in pebbles so we had to drive very slowly. The soldiers spent 20 minutes searching my car, then they bodysearched Tariq and me. They gave me a yellow tape to put on to the windscreen of the car, showing I had been searched and was a contractor. If I didn't have this stripe of yellow, a US sniper would shoot me as an enemy car.

By 10am we were inside the city. It was completely devastated, destruction everywhere. It looked like a city of ghosts. Falluja used to be a modern city; now there was nothing. We spent the day going through the rubble that had been the centre of the city; I didn't see a single building that was functioning.

The Americans had put a white tape across the roads to stop people wandering into areas that they still weren't allowed to enter. I remembered the market from before the war, when you couldn't walk through it because of the crowds. Now all the shops were marked with a cross, meaning that they had been searched and secured by the US military. But the bodies, some of them civilians and some of them insurgents, were still rotting inside.

There were dead dogs everywhere in this area, lying in the middle of the streets. Reports of rabies in Falluja had reached Baghdad, but I needed to find a doctor.
</SNIP>

Shouldn't Phallus have said, "I think the hundreds of thousands of people who were slaughtered at the time, including anybody who had the gumption to stand up and challenge us, made the situation tougher than I would have thought,"

Would that be the people who were told to rise up and overthrow saddam by george wimp bush* the first and then when they DID rise up, he said "Whaa? They're actually doing it? Man I didn't think they'd take me seriously. I got nothing. I've already pulled all support. Those guys are gonna get creamed. Now look at my new watch"

Are THOSE the people you "think" about, DICK?

Recover quickly my a$$!

Cheney doesn't know what he's talking about because the longer
we stay the more attacks there are gonna be. These people want
us OUT. The only way to end this is to bring in more troops,
but OOPS Bush is S T U P I D. He forgot that no one supports the
war and that he needs to extend the contract with other soldiers
already fighting. THey are supposed to be HOME !!!! So now in Bush's lasr effort, he brings recruiters to high schools (like MIne)
and tries to recruit tennagers. WOW THATS SAD IN MY BOOK.
