Jazz funeral in New Orleans for 'death of democracy' under Bush

To the tunes of old church spirituals, a jazz funeral rolled through the streets of the French Quarter on Thursday with hundreds of protesters mourning what they call the passing of democracy: a second term for President Bush.

The protest was timed to kick off as Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist administered the oath of office to Bush in Washington. The New Orleans event had the appearance of a lugubrious Mardi Gras ball, a raucous street protest, Halloween freak show and traditional New Orleans jazz funeral rolled into one.

It's a good thing I don't live in N.O., I'd be mad at you. This is the first I've heard of it.

2. We've been talking about it for months
on the Louisiana Forum. I've put a few topics out there in General Discussion but there wasn't a whole lot of interest. I met people from all over the country, so word got out pretty well. My crowd estimate is closer to 2500.

3. That sounds fun!
If the GOP steals another election in 2008, I'm going to hop on a plane to Nawlins on Coronation Day.

5. My daughter and her pals were in attendance................
I haven't talked to her yet about the experience, I give her a call later tonight when she's back in her dorm. I'm such a proud poppa :loveya: to have help raised a young woman who cares about humanity and the future of this planet!

6. This is delicious!
Thanks for posting this, what an effective tool of protest. I wish like anything I could have participated in that. Wonder if Anne Rice and Lydia Lunch were there.

9. I don't remember all these types of protests......
during the Clinton inaugurations. Doesn't that say something about how absolutely awful this idiot-in-chief is? I know there are many, many uneducated people in this country who just think what the MSM wants them to think, but when I think about it I have to say that there must be massive amounts of educated people who can think for themselves or follow their gut feelings/common sense to tell them that this guy is, without a doubt, "THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER".

16. Damn, wish I'd been there.
Great pics.

The Picayune could have given y'all a little more local ink, rather than just a damn picture and a paragraph on the wire story.
