Reid vows fight against budget
WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., on Wednesday drew applause from the nation's mayors when he said Democrats will oppose housing cuts expected to be part of President Bush's 2006 budget.

The budget, scheduled to be released Feb. 7, reportedly would slash a $4.7 billion community development grant program by as much as 50 percent.

Cities use the grants to provide low-income housing.

"Democrats are going to fight this year these shortsighted budget (cuts). We'll work to get these community development block grants," Reid, the Senate minority leader, said in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
