A shiver runs round the world as Bush bangs the drum for 'fire of freedom'
(an international take on the inauguration)

A shiver runs round the world as Bush bangs the drum for 'fire of freedom'

FRASER NELSON, JAMES KIRKUP AND ALEX MASSIE IN WASHINGTON

Story in full GEORGE Bush yesterday used his second inauguration as United States president to promise to bring the "untamed fire of freedom to the darkest corners of the world" and raise the prospect of a new US effort to topple oppressive regimes the world over.

In a speech certain to alarm Iran, North Korea and Saudi Arabia - and discomfort Europeans uneasy about the unbridled exercise of American power - the re-elected president said he would no longer "pretend" that intolerant regimes were acceptable.

Despite hopes from critics and friends - Tony Blair among them - that Mr Bush would use his second, overwhelming mandate from the American people to pursue a more consensual agenda at home and abroad, Mr Bush signalled that, if anything, his missionary zeal was redoubled. "Freedom is the permanent hope of mankind, the hunger in dark places, the longing of the soul," the president declared. "Fortunately for the oppressed, America’s influence is considerable and we will use it confidently in freedom’s cause."

51. All this talk of a mandate
always reminds me of China's "Mandate of Heaven." As I remember from class, when their govt fumbled the ball, and the Yellow River would happen to overflow, the people saw it as a sign from heaven as their duty to overthrow the govt

But the Prime Minister, doubtless speaking for many, raised the cautious hope that when it comes to implementing those ideas during the next four years, the White House would be more sensitive than in the past. "Evolution comes from experience," Mr Blair said.

5. Foreigners should read Washington's Farewell Address to Bush
and let him hear the words of our founding father himself. Then they should let Congress know that they can restrain the Commander in Chief with the War Powers Act of 1973, which requires there be no 'fabrications' in the circumstances used to send troops in harms way (depite the recent exception) !!!!!

60. War Powers Act of 1973 and the Joint Resolution are on the web
and anyone can read them for themselves. They read Washington's Farewell Address to the Nation to Congress every year, but no on seems to grasp that OUR liberty isn't dependent upon liberty in foreign lands, as Washington so eloquently points out ! See full text at http://www.eadshome.com/farewell.htm

War Powers Act 1973 is at http://www.cs.indiana.edu/statecraft/warpow.html

Joint Resolution is at

61. good commentary here from Arizona Republic
In his inaugural address, President Bush provided the most aggressive
formulation to date of the Bush doctrine: That the security of the
United States depends on the spread of liberty and democracy throughout the world. The starkness of his formulation highlighted the flaws in the doctrine and its imprudence as a guide to U.S. conduct in the world.

snip

But it is simply untrue that the lack of freedom, per se, is a security threat against which the United States must mobilize.

According to Freedom House, three-fifths of the world's people who live without liberty are in China. Yet there is not a comprehensive terrorist threat emanating from China.

snip

The United States needs a wide range of ad hoc alliances to protect us
against terrorist attack. Those with democracies would be more reliable. But securing the country shouldn't depend on remaking the world.

Obviously NOT intended to enlighten 'the darkest corners of the world' with the love of Jeebus. They are looking for a bigger fight. FFS!

WTF is wrong with this guy? WTF is wrong with his speech writers/ cronies? Have none of them any concept of how quickly wildfires can turn bringing civilisation to it's knees?

AND 'freedom'! WTF? What is 'freedom' a euphemism for in the Amerikan language? Have you people been "tog dog" in the food chain for so long that the meaning of 'freedom' has been peverted into your right to conduct your activities without control or interference.

I always thought that freedom exists independently to tyranny and oppression.

Nothing left to lose 'cause it was all burnt by the fire.

On the same topic...
"Freedom is the permanent hope of mankind, the hunger in dark places, the longing of the soul"
What a charming turn of phrase from The World's Statesman. Gives a strong impression that he yearns to share his dark heartless soul with the rest of humanity.

"Fortunately for the oppressed, America’s influence is considerable and we will use it confidently in freedom’s cause."
Fortunately, the oppressed are powerless to resist the might of America. May your confidence grow into arrogance as you share the true meaning of freedom with the world -- show 'the oppressed' what it means to have nothing left to lose.

31. I sent them an email to tell them what I thought
about their "overwhelming mandate" comment:

The phrase "overwhelming mandate" really stuck out of this article for me. Bush only got 3% more of the vote which does not give him an overwhelming mandate. I think if you saw the inauguration today on C-Span 2, you would have seen the protestors showing how little mandate this sycophant has. The opinion polls show that 55% of Americans asked now disagree with his policy on Iraq. Just because someone says something numerous times doesn't make it true. Especially if the person saying it is in the Bush administration.

Being a bully and the majority doesn't make a mandate, it just makes for bad policy and democracy.

The mandate was "provided him" in case they needed to go back to SCOTUS. The Ohio "fix" got a bit buggy, and there was always the possibility that a real hand count might show how they did it.

Kerry bailed, so the mandate is just icing on the cake :(

Nature and greater humanity have a history of balancing things. And we sure need some balance now.

He figures the world will eventually forget the WMD lies, etc., and accept his make-them-up-as-you-go "freedom" excuses for invading Iraq (and perhaps others to come) and killing thousands upon thousands of people if he repackages himself as the great "freedom spreader" and gets MSM to pound that into our psyches for 4 years.

More like the great manure spreader.

67. I heard the fan the fire of freedom, burn those who oppose it on
my way home last night on NPR and I about crashed my car. Talk about a threat to mankind. Do what we want or you will burn under a carpet of bombs as was said to Afghanistan a few short years back.

Shock and awe was just the beginning. I truly believe these maniacs with their underground, secure bunkers are willing and are on the verge of starting WWIII which will end most likely in some type of nuclear war.

Creepy, creepy people. What will happen to get the citizens riled up for the next leg of their war? What can be done to stop them?

71. Bush's Inaugural Address was all about the "BUZZ" words and PNAC!
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 09:39 PM by coreystone
'Perhaps, the most telling phrase by Bush was: "The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands." '

"Liberty" and "freedom" are not words which I would hope any of us would connote with a negative attribute, but, when they are used so extensively in the inaugural address given by Bush yesterday, one might question the propagandizing effect of these words, as spoken to the American people and the world community.

I agree that the phrase quoted by "ckramer" exposes a great concern by the world community as well as the citizens of our country. I would also care to assert that this phrase correlates well with the interests of those associated with "The Project For A New American Century". Link: http://www.newamericancentury.org /

"So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world." It seems that the "Bush Doctrine" of "No Nation Building" as promised to the American people in the election of 2000 has been amended. Was it changed by 9/11?? I think not! The following is from the Bush 2001 inaugural address:

"We will confront weapons of mass destruction, so that a new century is spared new horrors.

The enemies of liberty and our country should make no mistake: America remains engaged in the world by history and by choice, shaping a balance of power that favors freedom. We will defend our allies and our interests. We will show purpose without arrogance. We will meet aggression and bad faith with resolve and strength. And to all nations, we will speak for the values that gave our nation birth."

Link: http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe.jsp?query=Bush+...

I see a progressing posture upon the part of Bush, from the 2001 address through the 2005 address, to utilize the blind "patriotism" of the American people, and, victimize their vulnerability to support the words "freedom" and "liberty" in the behavioral propagandizing of the goals of the PNAC. How odd it is that the "buzz" word - "patriotism" was not used once in the 2005 speech! At least, I didn't hear it!

For any who would care to investigate further, there is another site named "The Project for the Old American Century" (POAC)- Link: http://www.oldamericancentury.org /

And, have a great day!

:-)
