There are plans in the works for what organizers call "a quiet community response" to a controversial group coming to the Champlain Valley.

Pastor Fred Phelps and members of the Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, Kan., are outspoken against homosexuals.

They protested civil unions in Vermont and now plan to attend next summer's Mayor's Cup festival in Plattsburgh.

Phelps sent Mayor Dan Stewart -- who is gay -- a letter in December saying his group plans to set up a booth at the festival and if they aren't allowed, they will stage protests.

6. Good God I wish that people would stop defaming the State of Kansas

by mentioning this asshole is in Kansas. It's always "Kansas Group" as if the people of Kansas accept this sick cult. He and his family are despised as much here as anywhere. The only reason that he hasn't been run out of town is because he and most of his children are attorneys...and pretty good ones. They bought most of their block and now have a compound. They are some really fucked up people. Personally, I believe their young kids should be taken away from them given the fact that two of his estranged sons have talked openly about the physical and mental abuse they endured. I personally believe the police and child services are too scared to go in there.

10. More money per minute

Best response I ever heard re this asshole was when progressive people showed up and pledged a certain amount of money, say a nickel a minute or a dollar a minute, to go to Human Rights Campaign or another gay-equality group, for every minute Phelps and his minions ranted. They'd post new, higher totals as the hatred piled higher and deeper.
