Barbara Boxer takes center stage
WASHINGTON
Barbara Boxer takes center stage

By DAVID WHITNEY
Sacramento Bee
January 23, 2005

WASHINGTON - Just a few weeks into the new congressional session, many are beginning to wonder aloud: "What's up with Barbara Boxer?"

The first week of the session, Boxer led the Senate challenge over certification of the Ohio presidential vote, citing irregularities.

In the end, it was she alone standing against certification, with 74 of her colleagues - including Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and 33 other Democrats - favoring the count.

And last week, Boxer was all over Condoleezza Rice at her confirmation hearing to be President Bush's new secretary of state. Boxer all but called Rice a liar over her statements leading up to the war in Iraq as Bush's national security adviser.

...

Boxer said in an interview last week that she is not the new diva of demagoguery.

"I was just doing my job, like I've always done it before," she said.

1. That's true. She never sounded any different to me.
She's always been very feisty and forthright. She is also very fortunate to have a very solid left-leaning constituency behind her.

10. I'm so proud she's my senator, and I've made sure and told her so.
Sen. Boxer is living proof you don't run from your liberal roots and base; you embrace them.

But her recent actions are really making me happy she's my senator!

3. "Demagoguery"..
"a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power"

This is hardly what Barbara does.

Go Barbara!!!!!
"We can not separate the lives we live from the words we speak" Paul Wellstone.

I think Sen. Boxer is doing that, she is becoming more like Wellstone. That is a good thing! IMO

But what's with the "diva of demagoguery?" Talk about a sexist remark. A negative hit! And one need not be a woman to smell that one!!

9. She deserves center stage for setting a shining example.
She made her male counterparts in the Senate, with the exception of John Kerry, look like the cowards they were.

22. I agree that she deserved it
she took center stage when nobody else would. She's definitely got her attention. Now hopefully the rank and file can make a positive example of her, and she can make prime use of her forum.

16. She indeed is "just doing (her) job".
The point is that she's pretty much the only one to do it the way it should. Loud and clear. She is earning the respect the others are losing. Nobody prevents Ms. Clinton or Mr. Kerry to do the same but themselves.

is because she didn't want to make her cry in front of a national audience.

19. Hey, that's NO reason to pull one's punches. Contradicta should be
made to cry, scream, crawl, and writhe in shame, AND in public, for the absolute hell of which she is midwife. Ms. Mushroom Cloud indeed. Further proof that all the jackasses and incompetents and utter failures in this regime fail UP. HINT: I believe that's how you know them. They stick around and/or get promoted if they're complete fuck-ups.

And BTW, Barbara "Backbone" Boxer is MY Senator, too, and I've called her office several times by now to say a big, hearty THANK YOU! We ALL should. She doesn't have to be your Senate representative to need a little appreciation.

1 (800) 839 - 5276 - TOLL FREE to the Capitol Hill Switchboard. You can call her office for nothing. Good behavior deserves reward. Any extra money I can scrape together next week after all the bill-paying, I'm using to send her flowers.

She makes me proud to be a Californian! Now, Dianne Feinstein on the other hand...

20. In an age of pervasive lying, a truth-teller takes center stage.
To suggest that truth-telling is demagoguery is highly Orwellian.

It would behoove other Dems to start speaking truth, and voting on truth too. (On Jan. 6 and in the committe vote on Condaliar we experienced a number of Dems speaking truth, then voting the opposite.)

He made one vote we didnt like and now he's a *traitor*

This week it's Boxer in 2008
First bad vote she will also be a *traitor*

Can we quit jumping EVERY bandwagon that comes along?

31. I think she IS a hero...
she's my senator and I can say I've never spoken to a more courteous office staff everytime I call (and believe me - it's been many). Her staff has always written/emailed me back, she asks us (Californians) on a continual basis what we want, etc. She's in it for us. She's a Senatr actually REPRESENTING the people that voted for her. I even know Republicans here who love her for her courage and the fact that she's a "gutsy lady" (as one of my moderate - yes there are a few moderates still left - Republican co-workers told me this week).
