Hubble rescue 'will be scrapped'

Hubble needs regular maintenance

The future of the Hubble Space Telescope is in doubt after the White House refused money for a rescue plan, US media has reported.
US space agency Nasa will announce the decision in February, ending plans to send a human or a robot repairman, the Washington Post reported.

The service cost was expected to top $1bn, but has been cut from the federal budget request, sources told the paper.

For 15 years Hubble has captured some of the most profound images of space.

(snip)

Astronauts made servicing visits to the telescope in 1993, 1997, 1991 and 2002, with a final servicing mission - now cancelled - due for 2006.

2. Good. And they need to axe the ISS, too.
The Hubble has been superceded by better ground telescopes. There's very little need to place optical telescopes in orbit any longer. It's the 21st century.

The International Space Station is another boondoggle. It won't be completed, isn't doing good science and will eventually be allowed to burn up on reentry.

Listen, I absolutely love space exploration and I grew up watching the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space missions, but we are bleeding money on scientifically useless projects. (The HST has provided lots of good science, but it's time to shut her down.)
