Times: British Foreign Secretary Straw snubs US hawks on Iran
Straw snubs US hawks on Iran

By David Cracknell and Tony Allen-Mills, Washington
Sunday Times, January 23, 2005

JACK STRAW has drawn up a dossier putting the case against a military attack on Iran amid fears that President George W Bush’s administration may seek Britain’s backing for a new conflict.

<Snip>

The document says a peaceful solution led by Britain, France and Germany is “in the best interests of Iran and the international community”. It refers to “safeguarding Iran’s right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology”.

1. electioneering time over here
I posted a comment about this last night. Bliar et al know damned well that supporting an invasion of Iran would be political suicide. Straws dossier is intended for domestic consumption as much as the rest of the world.

Difficult to be sure but I have a feeling that there would be even bigger demonstrations than last time if the UK sent its military into Iran. There would probably be a big swing to the Lib-Dems at election time too as a consequence; they were the only party with the guts to oppose the madness first time around and that seems to have bolstered their ratings.
