AP: U.S. Foresaw Terror Threats in 1970s
According to documents obtained by AP...

"WASHINGTON - Nearly three decades before the Sept. 11 attacks, a high-level government panel developed plans to protect the nation against terrorist acts ranging from radiological "dirty bombs" to airline missile attacks, according to declassified documents obtained by The Associated Press.

"Unless governments take basic precautions, we will continue to stand at the edge of an awful abyss," Robert Kupperman, chief scientist for the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, wrote in a 1977 report that summarized nearly five years of work by the Cabinet Committee to Combat Terrorism.

The group was formed in September 1972 by President Nixon after Palestinian commandos slaughtered 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympic Games. The committee involved people as diverse as Henry Kissinger to a young Rudolph Giuliani, the once-secret documents show.

<snip>

Eventually, the group's influence waned as competing priorities, a change of presidents ushered in by Watergate, bureaucratic turf battles and a lack of spectacular domestic attacks took their toll.

But before that happened, the panel identified many of the same threats that would confront President Bush at the dawn of the 21st century."

1. I remember the Weathermen attack on the Chicago water supply- that did not
really happen in the late 60's -early 70's.

Ir was a time when the internal "terrorists" had to be stopped and GOP was convinced they - militant leftest types - would use bio and chem against the US citizens in their evil desire to stop the War in Vietnam.

4. How true that is!
FBI dossiers for "terrorists" like John Lennon, while the real problem was ignored. And "young Rudy Guiliani" was there, yet now happily flacks for chimpco repeating their mantra "who could have imagined?"
If you ask me, his involvement in this back then should put a serious dent in his armor.

2. This is important news
This is yet another item that needs to be brought up about September 11th. It wasn't new to have terrorism, and it wasn't misunderstood. This has been real for a very long time. It makes the 9/11 failure all that much more horrible. The fake war... :nuke:

6. I agree that it's important...especially in 2008 because of this line...

Rudy dropped the ball, and we can't let them forget it.

Edited to add if Kerik didn't finish him off, this will.

7. The documents are here...
http://wid.ap.org/documents/nixonterror.html

Among others...

- A White House memo pointing out that airlines will "scream bloody murder" if forced to pay for security improvements such as tighter security screenings and routine baggage inspections.

- A three-page letter from National Security Council staffer Richard T. Kennedy to Henry Kissinger about steps the government was taking to secure the country from terrorism. He mentions improvements in securing nuclear materials to keep them out of the hands of terrorists, which he calls "a real threat, not science fiction."

- A five-page report from Secretary of State William Rogers to President Nixon outlining the "good news and bad news" on combatting such terrorism as hijackings, letter bombs, and kidnappings. The report notes the "mind-boggling possibilities for terrorists" posed by their acquisition of nuclear materials.

9. But SecState-in-waiting, Condi said
"No one could have imagined that terrorists would fly airplanes into buildings"?

snip>
Committee members identified commercial jets as a particular vulnerability, but raised concerns that airlines would not pay for security improvements such as tighter screening procedures and routine baggage inspections.
...
Thousands of pages of heavily blacked out records and memos obtained by the AP from government archives and under the Freedom of Information Act show the task force:

_discussed defending commercial aircraft against being shot down by portable missile systems;
.............

Then, Ms Rice, why had shooting down commercial aircraft been discussed before? and BTW, your pants are on fire.

10. Eiffel Tower. This has bothered me for a long time.
If I knew about this, Rice knew about this. (or damned well should have)

In the 1994 hijacking of the Air France jet in Algiers, four men seized control of Flight 8969, a huge Airbus A-300, as it prepared to depart for Paris on Christmas Eve. After killing three passengers, the hijackers forced the plane to land at Marseilles, where it took on 27 tons of fuel, instead of the 10 tons normally needed for the flight to Paris. French commandos stormed the plane on the tarmac and killed all four hijackers, saving the lives of the remaining passengers and crew. French authorities said the aircraft would have been "a flying bomb" had it crashed into the Eiffel Tower or exploded over Paris. In addition to the heavy load of fuel, French authorities discovered 20 sticks of dynamite aboard the plane.

-----

Bruguière knew the GIA had big ambitions. An investigation of the organization had yielded a drawing of the Eiffel Tower exploding. Had these hijackers intended to crash the fuel-heavy jet into France's icon?

From: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/nation-world/terroristwithin/chapter5.html

-----

On December 24, 1994, Algerian Armed Islamic Group hijacked an AirFrance commercial jet and threatened to crash it into the Eiffel Tower.

I can't find any original news reports, but I remember when this happened.

16. That was bullshit
There's another post on here about the discovery of a plot to assassinate Nixon by crashing a plane into the White House. In the 90s, a man in a small plane managed to violate DC airspace and hit the White House. Hell, that freep Tom Clancy wrote a novel prior to 2001 in which a hijacked plane hits a building in Washington.

12. So now they'll blame Carter...cause Ford wasn't in long enough
they won't blame Reagan or Bush I...they'll skip up to Clinton

"Eventually, the group's influence waned as competing priorities, a change of presidents ushered in by Watergate, bureaucratic turf battles and a lack of spectacular domestic attacks took their toll."

They won't blame Nixon, they'll say the democrats distracted him with Watergate.

"...to airline missile attacks..."

Yo! Condi? Can you read?

14. I saw them at the protest...
in DC, they were great!

Bush disabled the military aircraft used to thwart such an attack as 9/11 shortly before it happened---again, 9/11 was an inside job, there is no doubt in my mind.

15. usa PLANNED fake domestic terror attacks 1960's declassified docs show
courtesy of the george washington university NSA archives this is the declassified document
http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/news/20010430/northwoods.pdf

it is a plan to fake a terror campaign across the usa and included plans for assassinations, sinking of boats (real or simulated),faking an attack on a civilian airliner, and blowing up a US ship in foreign waters as an excuse to invade

at first glance one would say,how dumb are these cold war dinosaurs that are back in business selling fear,
but then i realised, its how dumb do they think we are

17. Excellent BBC series showing that "Terrorism" was a neocon creation
I just posted a message on another thread about a 3 part series the BBC just re-ran last week entitled - "The Power of Nightmares".

"In a new series, the Power of Nightmares explores how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion."

Check out the original thread for links to the BBC and on-line videos.
