Germany arrests two suspected Iraq bomb plotters

KARLSRUHE, Germany (Reuters) - German police have arrested two men suspected of plotting an al Qaeda suicide attack in Iraq.

The federal prosecutor's office on Sunday identified the men as Ibrahim Mohammed K, a 29-year-old Iraqi believed to be a high-ranking al Qaeda figure, and Yasser Abu S, a 31-year-old stateless Palestinian from Libya.

The prosecutor's office say the Iraqi had visited al Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan many times before the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001 and remained for a year afterwards, fighting U.S. forces there.

Prosecutors say the leaders persuaded the Iraqi suspect to recruit suicide bombers in Europe. With his German travel documents, he was able to travel across the continent, arriving in Germany in September 2002, they said. The Iraqi's name does not, however, feature on published FBI or United Nations lists of al Qaeda members.

Police arrested 22 people on January 12 in a series of raids across Germany in pursuit of Islamic extremists suspected of helping militant groups and recruiting fighters for "holy war".

Security sources say fighters have travelled to Iraq from a number of European countries to join the insurgency. Security officials also fear militants who gain experience there will pose a threat on their return.
