BAGHDAD, Jan 23 (AFP) - Two US soldiers were handed prison sentences for their roles in the fatal shooting of an Iraqi woman who worked as an interpreter with the US military, a statement said Sunday.

On November 24, Specialist Charley Hoosier, Specialist Rami Dajani and 28-year-old Luma, whose full name was not disclosed, were in a room at an American base, joking about killing someone, the soldiers testified Saturday at a court martial hearing.

Dajani handed a handgun to Hoosier, who thought it had been cleared and pulled the trigger as he held it to the young woman's head. The two GIs then lied to investigators, claiming that Luma had shot herself.

It was an accident. Happens all the time. Let the first person who has never accidentaly killed someone by play acting with pistols cast the first stone.

No witnesses other than the perpetrators, and yet the crime is manslaughter? Seems like murder to me. What small sentences for what appears to have been some kind of torture.

She was an interpreter for which side? I didn't catch that in the article.

She was shot with her own gun, and the idiot (Hooser) didn't check to see if it was loaded. The interpreter had a 6 year old daughter, and her family got $25,000 in compensation. The shooter is from Midland, Texas.
