3 GOP Lawmakers May Seek Governors' Seats

WASHINGTON - Less than a month into a new, two-year Congress, the line is forming among House members considering their next career moves.

Republican Rep. C.L. (Butch) Otter of Idaho is all but officially running for governor of his state, and GOP Reps. Jim Nussle of Iowa and Jim Gibbons of Nevada both seem headed in the same direction in theirs.

"We will run a vigorous campaign," said one former Idaho governor, Phil Batt, leaving no doubt about Otter's intentions.

Nussle and Gibbons say they expect to make announcements in the next few months about their plans.

Nussle's seat is ripe for a pick-up by the Democrats. Gore won the district 52-45, and Kerry won 53-46.

1. Nussle Gov of Iowa...never!
I'm in Iowa and I can't imagine having that wingnut as our governor.

We currently have an outstanding Dem governor--Vilsack--and it would be shocking to go from Vilsack to Nussle's extremism.

It's bad enough living in a red state, that used to be blue. Nussle as Gov would be more than I could handle at this point!

2. Finally we will get Nussle out of our Congressional District
since he has been impossible to get rid of here. I have figured out his base, old people relying on his staff for detailed information on their SS or health benefits etc. This will probably not translate statewide however. However he has to be weakened even before the GOP primary vote by his opponents, particularly Doug Gross and Bob Vander Plaats. What is a good tactic is to register in the GOP for the primaries and vote against Nussle. Make it a contentious primary. This worked to weaken Ganske and Gross in 2002 so Harkin and Vilsack were re-elected. But Nussle's opponents need some bolstering before the primaries since he is a very wily and extremely nasty opponent who has notoriously vicious last minute campaign ads against everyone who runs against him. I am glad he is venturing out of his district so we can have a chance to end his foul political career.
