PRISONERS PERISH IN FIRE

A prison fire in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, has claimed the lives of 94 inmates.

Intially, authorities said 67 people had died and a further 23 inmates suffered smoke inhalation when the fire broke out on Monday.

Prison officials said the cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical short-circuit.

Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef has ordered an investigation.

It was not immediately clear whether the prison housed any of the more than 200 Islamic militants arrested in recent months in a nationwide manhunt for supporters of Saudi-born Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terror network.
