Russian Lawmakers Targets Jewish Groups
Russian Lawmakers Targets Jewish Groups
Monday January 24, 2005 3:25pm

MOSCOW (AP) - A group of nationalist Russian lawmakers called Monday for a sweeping investigation aimed at outlawing all Jewish organizations and punishing officials who support them, accusing Jews of fomenting ethnic hatred and saying they provoke anti-Semitism.

In a letter dated Jan. 13, about 20 members of the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, asked Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov to investigate their claims and to launch proceedings "on the prohibition in our country of all religious and ethnic Jewish organizations as extremist."

The letter, faxed in part to The Associated Press by the office of lawmaker Alexander Krutov, said, "The negative assessments by Russian patriots of the qualities and actions against non-Jews that are typical of Jews correspond to the truth ... The statements and publications against Jews that have incriminated patriots are self-defense, which is not always stylistically correct but is justified in essence."

The stunning call to ban all Jewish groups raised concerns of persistent anti-Semitism in Russia.

2. This is the same kind of shit that drove my ancestors out 100 years ago.
Like you said, it never goes away. Here they say that Jews are the cause of anti-Semitism, and I read in my a Russian history book (I took a class last year) about a remark by Nicolas II reguarding the pogroms, "Is it not the zhids (a Russian word meaning 'kike') who have brought this on themselves?"

Same shit, different pile.

5. There was a time when it was seriously punished.
Jews played a pivotal role in the CPSU, and anti-Semitism was vigorously prosecuted, especially prior to WW2. This isn't inherent in the Russian people, but of their current backward-looking leadership.

6. Doctor's plot.
Babel's short stories based upon what he saw: "Red Cavalry."

"Internationalism" as a reactionary (and code word for Jewish) anti-Soviet plot.

Most pogroms weren't induced by the tsar. Some were induced by the priests; others, endorsed by the priests to retain authority.

Jews played a pivotal role in the CPSU ... early on ... and their Jewishness later conveniently covered by silence.

3. So, what else is new?
My Grand parents left there 102-107 years ago.

It's like Tevye's "Prayer For the Czar" --

"God Bless and Keep The Czar -- far away from me."

Of course, the thing to remember is that this is the way the Muscovites treated all non-Slavs - for centuries (Jews, Armenians, Georgians, Turkmen, Muslims, Mongols, etc.)

7. At least anti-semitism isn't a problem there.
You know things are bad when moving to Israel is the safe move.

8. Back to the days of the pogroms!
What's next for the Duma, strip Jews of their citizenship? The dark side of the Force is taking over the world!
