Drastic bill aims to end prospect of national park (ME)
Drastic bill aims to end prospect of national park

AUGUSTA — A radical bill is highlighting some northern Maine communities' concerns about the idea of turning millions of acres of forestland into a national park. State Rep. Henry Joy, R-Crystal, wants the Legislature to block progress on a so-called Maine Woods National Park. To do this, the northern Maine lawmaker has proposed that the state take ownership of nearly all federal property in Maine and forbid the U.S. government from future acquisitions in the state.

1. Lots of luck with that, Mr. Joy
Let us know how Maine's attempt to preempt federal eminent domain works out. :eyes:

2. A National Park in the Maine Northwoods
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 10:11 AM by BeFree
What a great idea! Last I heard of it was several years ago, looks like the plans are moving forward. Good news!

Ever been to Baxter State Park? It is one of the most spirit laden places this ol' boy has ever been. Or, if you're disinclined to believe in spirits, the most special of wild places. Baxter sits in the heart of those woods.

The whole area needs to be protected from development. In twenty years it could be clear cut and it would be a 100 years before it stabilized again. So glad to hear that it may be protected.

4. It's easy to feel that way: Nothing
But whatever happens, something will remain. And if, by some miracle, we manage to survive, then what is left will be the best of environments. Either way, it's a win.
