Gephardt launches Web site highlighting rival's statements
By Will Lester
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:30 p.m. September 16, 2003

WASHINGTON – Dick Gephardt is using rival Howard Dean's campaign strong suit – the Internet – to challenge the front-runner's past and present statements on Medicare and Social Security.

Not content to limit his criticism of Dean to campaign speeches, the Missouri congressman has launched a Web site – Deanfacts.com – that detail the former Vermont governor's eight-year-old comments about raising the Social Security retirement age and overhauling the Medicare program as well as his recent remarks about the issues.

<snip>

Dean spokeswoman Tricia Enright called the Web site "the first smear Web site we've seen produced by a major presidential candidate."

2. Gephardt.................
seems like a very desparate man. This will further distance him from the contenders. Save this crap for Bush you moron.

3. I think we have to have some mixing up
If we don't have our (gulp) 10 candidates mixing it up it's going to be McGovern all over again. Playing nice to each other and running around in a pack, overhyping bush's already well established track record won't do when the masses pull the lever in November. I'm frankly looking for the front runner... as long as it isn't Clark.

4. So, does it attack only Dean?
If so, that's quite a compliment. I wonder how the others feel about not mattering any more?

6. Putz!
It smacks of desperation--Dickie Dickwad hasn't been able to define his own race and theme, and he's bashing Dean. Not a good sign.

Nobody is saying all dems should play kissy-kissy with each other, but if asswipes like Dickie had spent one-one MILLIONTH of the energy he spends bashing Dean and used it to bash the Spawn of Satan, and actually fihgt for something, this country would not be in the mess it's in!!!!!!!!!!!!

16. I haven't looked at the site yet, but
it will be interesting to see what he's dug up, and how he uses it. Of course the Repukes can always use gay civil unions against Dean, and probably will. I can't wait to see how many different hateful ways they can come up with to spin that. But Gephardt doesn't really dare take serious issue with anything Dean's actually done. So he has to dig for dirt. Nice of him to do Rove's work for him.

17. What I saw was from 8-10 years ago
I wonder if Gep would approve of going back a little further into...say his OWN record. Before '88, he opposed minimum wage and the Dept of Education. He supported a Constitutional amendment banning abortion and a FREEZE on SS.

A backbiter could probably hunt up some of Gep's damning quotes if they were desperate or motivated by an insane desire to smear him.

What a stupid stupid move.

5. with so much time on his hands,
one wonders why Gephardt couldn't make it to more of those 85% of house votes that he missed while on the campaign trail.

8. Gephardt was not in Iowas
on Saturday - he was not missed by many -

he is a disgusting thing and though if I were given no other choice, I would hold my nose and vote for him, that is the only way that he would get my vote.

12. When will he go after Bush?
The last I heard, Dean had chewed out his staff for releasing something that referred to Gep too harshly.

This is exactly the kind of politics that keep voters at home.

15. Yes, I see now
It's just so frustrating to see when Dems reveal themselves as so small.

I looked at the site. It takes one sentence quotes from 8-10 years ago with no context. It is sensationalist fodder for the delight of wingers and the pundacracy.

All a retalitory site would need is one snapshot of Dick in the Rose Garden with geedub, last November.

18. Gep - you just lost my support if you win the nomination.
Not that I don't mind a few spars here and there, but creating a web site to vehemently attack your DEMOCRATIC opponent? That's wrong.
