Rolling Stone will accept ad for new Bible

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/R/ROLLING_STONE_BIBLE_AD?SITE=TXSAE&SECTION=ENTERTAINMENT&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Rolling Stone magazine has reversed itself and agreed to accept an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Tuesday.

Rolling Stone sent Zondervan a contract for a half-page ad in the rock magazine's Feb. 24 issue, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan executive vice president of marketing. He said Rolling Stone gave no explanation for its change of heart.

Zondervan bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for a new Bible translation aimed at young people, called Today's New International Version. About two weeks ago, the publisher said it was told that Rolling Stone's policy was not to accept advertisements for religious materials

Other media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said.

3. Why didn't they before?
They didn't allow any ads for anything religious? That must have stopped a lot of business. Interesting -- I never noticed.

7. Tidbit sure to cause freeper's head to implode...cigs made of the Bible
http://www.religionnewsblog.com/9997/Holy-smokes--Prisoners-using-Bibles-to-make-cigarettes

WINNIPEG - Staff at Headingly jail have started confiscating Bibles after discovering prisoners were using the pages for roll-your-own smokes.

The provincial jails are supposed to be tobacco-free, but enterprising inmates have come up with their own smokes - a combination of leaves from tea bags and Nicorette gum that is boiled, dried and rolled in the thin pages of the New or Old Testament.

"It's very difficult to catch them because they're very discreet," said Cathy Sandney, the prison's superintendent.

"They may have to pay for it. Normally, there's a consequence when you destroy government property."

14. Check out the King James Only crowd
They are vicious and question the salvation of those of us who use any other version, not to mention call us really awful names. Very Christian of 'em, don't ya think? Nah, I don't think so either.

13. Personally, It doesn't really bother me
It would be one thing if they were to publish an overtly proselytizing ad "Join Jesus!" or something like that. But an ad for a Bible? This non-Christian is strong enough to take it. I'm not so anti-religion that I refuse to see it anywhere. If it's just an ad for a Bible, who cares?

but those Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints TV ads were so damn funny! I don't subscribe to RS anyway, but this isn't that bad. It can go in the back sections with the Miss Cleo tarot card reading ads.

26. So, even a "bastion" of counter-culture is forced to follow the bidding;
I remember the last few pages of Stephen King's "Firestarter".

The little girl, the child of two of the Government's test subjects, goes "to the one newspaper" (or something like that) "not controlled by the government. Rolling Stone Magazine . . ."

Something to that effect . . .

31. I wonder what the big changes are in this new version?
I suspect there are lot of freepers who will be quite upset by this! Lots of 'em are very entrenched into the original version, and don't want anyone messing with it!

It should be interesting to watch the infighting.

Custom-printed Bibles for U.S. Special Ops on the way

Although the International Bible Society (IBS) indeed will crank out a limited-run, special edition of the New International Version Bible in the near future, it's unlikely that readers will discover, for example, a previously unreleased surprise ending to the Good Book. Rather, according to FedBizOpps.com, a site for federal government procurement opportunities, the Department of Defense intends to award the IBS a sole-source contract for the production of 10,000 Bibles containing military-specific messages and imagery. The Bibles - which will be distributed to soldiers of the elite U.S. Special Operations Command - will feature a "custom-designed cover" and "Army designed color photographs and text inserts."

It appears that IBS's crafting of the Special Ops Bible will rely on the "new package, same great taste" approach that the commercial sector often takes when introducing a new logo or easy-grip handle for an existing product. It's hopefully safe to assume that though the Bibles are new, they will not be "improved." IBS has an extraordinary task ahead of it, as they must juxtapose, hypothetically, Christ's "Blessed are the peacemakers" pronouncement with army-centric motivational messages and images. A tough job indeed, given the context of 100,000 "excess casualties" - consisting mainly of women and children - that U.S. and British military forces may have caused since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, as indicated in the Oct. 29, 2004, edition of The Lancet, a British medical journal

This is a switcheroo. They actually WANT their ad in this "filthy" magazine. What's next? Will they place ads in Hustler?

38. The Freepers got to em
I think they plan massive assaults whenever there is any situation like this that they don't like. They probably bombarded Rolling Stone with thousands of nasty emails until they caved in from the pressure. They do this on every poll and look what they did to this thread-it's beyond obvious! We need to launch similiar massive and strong attacks every time they pull crap like this! Rolling Stone will certainly hear from me!

39. Which bible do the fundies use?

The Scofield Study Bible, written in 1909 by one Cyrus Ingerson Scofield. He was in jail when he had a religious conversion and found a new calling at bible editing.
It was this widely sold book that introduced all the weird fantasies that the Fundies rant about, Dispensationalism, Rapture, the date of creation in 4004 B.C. and so on. This crazy-talk was never part of Christianity until it was hallucinated only a few years before and included in the study bible.

Scofield’s method was to use all the text from the King James Bible for authenticity, but add notes and headings intermingled with the original. Since most of the archaic language of the KJ is unreadable, the notes became the message. To quote one fan of the book, “I have ten Bibles in the house and this is the only one I can understand”.

The identity and motives of Scofield’s rich sponsors remain unknown.

Keep in mind please that to actual Christians this junk-religion is babble or heresy.
