Moore Proposes Moving Ten Commandments Monument to U.S. Capitol
Seeking to move his battle over religion in government to a national stage, suspended state Chief Justice Roy Moore on Tuesday offered his Ten Commandments monument to Congress for display in the U.S. Capitol.

The offer came nearly three weeks after the 5,300-pound granite monument was removed from the rotunda of the state judicial building to comply with a federal judge's order. Moore refused to follow the order, but Alabama's eight associate justices overruled him.

(snip)

Moore met with several members of Congress last week in Washington to discuss public displays of the Ten Commandments, said his spokeswoman Jessica Atteberry. She declined to identify the lawmakers.

Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby issued a statement calling on Congress to accept Moore's "gracious offer." A spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert said the speaker had no comment because Moore had not sent him a formal invitation to take the monument. But he noted that Hastert keeps a copy of the commandments in his office.

Ayesha Khan, an attorney for one of the groups that sued to have the monument removed from the judicial building, said Moore's request "shows the same level of disregard for federal taxpayers as he has shown all along for Alabama state taxpayers."

4. How will it be presented?
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 08:49 PM by Sephirstein
Will it be presented as a fundie circle-jerk or as part of a tribute to both the secular and religious influences on American and Western jurisprudence?

6. will we take the bait?
If it's displayed in the Capitol, it will be for the purpose of egging the Left to loudly denounce it, so the wingers can then say: See how the Left denounced the Lord. They'll measure victory on the decible level of our voices.

7. As long as it's not on display to the public
They can use it as a door stop. Turn it into a fountain. They can absolutely accept it. They just can't display it.

15. For an odd side-note
if you try to right-click on the photo of Judge Roy Moore with his family in this google image page, you will be chagrinned to discover it immediately converts to a porno site, from which you can absolutely not escape!

If anyone has ever gone through this frightening predicament, stumbling into a wierd site which siezes your computer, could you tell me if there's an easy way to get out without trying to simply turn off your computer?

Does anyone see this as humorous, that someone has screwed around with his family photo?

Hit control-alt-delete as fast you can, then when the list of active applications comes up, end task on the offending Internet Explorer window. Then open a new browser window to "Democratic Underground", and promise yourself never to click on "those kind of links" ever again.

18. Thank you!
I'm writing down your advice, because I TRULY don't want to go through this again.

You can only have visions of the same guys who barged in and hauled off Monica Lewinsky's computer suddenly crashing through your door and making off with your own, yelling "We'll just see what John Ashcroft has to say about this!"

Thanks a lot. No kidding. I mean it. Hey, Thanks. :hi:

29. Sometimes I get caught on a web site.
The kind that won't let you back out. You just have to type another url in the address bar to go to another site. It is particularly annoying when you're doing a google search and you've searched through several pages and then get stuck so you have to start your search over from scratch.

Other sites (the kind that comes to mind is sites that offer free images) throw up page after page and when you close one page it opens another. You can wind up with many open windows. Then you have to do the Control Alternate Delete route. Or - you can get a popup stopper.

25. I say "Bring it On"
Bush has 2 choices, regardless of of what congress says.

If he accepts the status there will be a large outcry from progressives like ourselves who would love nothing more than more ammunitions for our guns to fight this battle to get him out of office.

HOWEVER....

If Bush refuses it he'll alienate more fundie voters who actually think Bush is a little too "liberal".

It's could sour either way for Bush

26. here's an open invitation to put it in my front yard.
Dear Chief Justice Roy Moore,

As a resident of Aurora Colorado, I firmly believe that something is missing from my bussling metropolis. People wander around in a daze with no direction and with general hostility towards their fellow man. That is why I, Timm Marshall, yes THE Timm Marshall, humbly beg of you to place this massive monument upon my front yard for all of Aurora to see.

Why, what a sight it would be. Hundreds, if not thousands of people, driving by my humble abode only to catch a brief glimpse of the Ten Commandments you have fought so long and hard for. Why surely their lives would be irrevocably changed by viewing such a holy shrine. No more crime, no more adultery, no more fornication... imagine it Mr. Moore, paradise.

This is a great opportunity Mr. Moore. I just hope you can capitalize on it before the world's largest prairie dog statue is delivered on October 12th, 2003 anno domini. Either way, I'm turning my house into a tourist trap.

Yours in Yahweh,

The Timm Marshall

27. Why can't they move it to Heritage USA?
Or any church grounds where it is totally appropriate.

I see it as part of a biblical themed mini golf course. The ten commandments, the old rugged cross, Solomon's temple, the valley of the dry bones, a crypt that opens and Lazarus comes out, a Red sea that parts, and you have to time your shot to get through while it's parted.
