Choose Death? South Carolina Lawmakers Propose Alternatives to 'Choose Life' Plates

Associated Press

Columbia, South Carolina, Jan. 26 - South Carolina lawmakers are proposing several alternatives to the state's "Choose Life" license plates including "Choose Death," "Choose Abortion" and simply "Pro Choice."

The proposals were introduced after the U.S. Supreme Court this week refused to hear South Carolina's appeal of a ruling that found the state's "Choose Life" plates unconstitutional.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals had earlier ruled "Choose Life" plates violated the First Amendment because abortion rights supporters were not offered a similar plate.

Now state lawmakers are proposing alternatives. State Senator David Thomas, a Republican from Greenville, introduced a bill creating a "Pro Choice" version of the license plate.

3. How about "choose life to 20 years, 15 with good behavior"?
No, that's too long.

4. Choose Death?
Cute. I'd love to have the choice of a choice plate here in the bushlands of Florida. Those yellow plates with their little grinning stick figures really annoy me. To annoy those with them, I've added a large choice sticker and a Darwin fish to my upside down American flag (a dimbulb at work actually asked me if I had put the flag up that way by accident!). And for those Bushbots out there, I have the sticker 'You voted for Bush? How embarrassing!'

9. imagine how confused the anti-abortion and pro-execution people will be
They'd have to get one each, of "choose death" and "choose life", then they'd get all mixed up!

6. Proof all the South isn't full of wingnuts
My state, Tennessee, just got rid of the damn things and our General Assembly just went along with it instead of creating some sort of snide commentary.

7. God I love my state
They're also trying to pass minimum sentences for clergy who "marry" same sex couples. Was on the news last night. I'll try to find a link.

The repukes in power in this state are oblivious to the fact that they themselves are excellent arguments for keeping abortion legal.

16. Maybe folks who oppose the death penalty should ask for an anti-capital
Edited on Wed Jan-26-05 10:57 PM by w4rma
punishment plate. "Choose life". With pictures on the license plate to give it context. I'm really sick of folks who love war and love the death penalty abusing the term "pro-life". :puke:

17. It would be so much easier to just eliminate personal sentiments
from vehicle I.D. plates.

Why should a state government be in the business of choosing one over another, when the purpose of the plate is for identification of vehicles.

If a vehicle owner desires to exhibit a particular view, bumper stickers are widely available.

18. That is so logical, it's scary.
I don't think we have state sanctioned bumper stickers in Canada yet, and I hope we never do. So far, our's are just innocuous tourism slogans I think.
