Ten Commandments Monument In Tatum

The monument that has become the banner for "religious debate" was on display today again in east Texas. The Ten Commandments monument, taken out of an Alabama judge's courthouse in 2003, was on display in Tatum today. The monument has already traveled to Smith and Gregg counties for showings.

Today's appearance brought out hundreds of Tatum area residents to "Lions Club Park". A Houston based veterans group has taken the 2-and-a-half ton monument on a tour of 16 states since July. Local Residents we talked to appreciated the visit. The monument will next travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Bob Hallmark, reporting.

1. This Christian persecution complex is getting old
They got tv stations, radio stations, and every fucking politician in the country talks about how 'Christian' they are.

It was Thomas Jefferson who coined the phrase 'wall of separation between church and state'.

14. Yes! Above all, theocracy is goddamn boring!
Theocratic government has many ills, chief among them its substitution of superstition for rationality. It is loaded with dangers, from arbitrary justice to social persecution to ethnic cleansing.

But it's also really, really boring.

I'm sick of these people, too, constantly manifesting their faith like a horde of religious flashers. Christ said the meek, you idiots, the meek.

And I think boredom's probably our last salvation, if you'll pardon the pun. Rationality hasn't worked. Fortunately, Americans are just too hedonistic to go for the whole nine years of Christian government. It will probably occur once the right wing Christians get enough power to start making sufficient numbers of people miserable--that'll bring this holy freak show to a halt.

20. And it isn't even Christian!
It's more a kind of pagan idolotry, borrowing Old Testament symbols.

Ever notice that these guys NEVER talk about any of the teachings of Christ?
Their so-called Christianity is more a kind of lunatic tribalism.

whining about how they should be plastered in public spaces. Only our nutty Christian sects.

7. It ISN'T a monument! It's a religious icon!
Just like the cross, or the Quran.

Here's what a monument is:
3 a (1) : a lasting evidence, reminder, or example of someone or something notable or great (2) : a distinguished person b :a memorial stone or a building erected in remembrance of a person or event.

13. Thinking the same thing
Most people there are the theological descendents of John Calvin.

If Calvin were there, he would be slinging a sledge hammer.

Afterwards, he would have all of them burned at the stake.

16. Yes. Remember when they were complaining about Nativity Scenes?
And how they should be allowed on all public property?

St Francis is credited with preparing the first one. They're big time Roman Catholic. As in the Whore of Babylon, Scarlet Woman, etc.

15. They only exhibit their hypocrisy by ignoring the 1st Commandment
THOU SHALT NOT KILL.

100,000 dead Iraqis. 1400 dead soldiers.

17. Actually...
Thou Shalt Not Kill is not the 1st but the 6th commandment. Also, the correct translation from Hebrew is "Thou Shalt Not Murder". That aside you are correct in their hypocrisy.

18. Many many people disagree with you on your interpretation
It has been passed down for more than two thousand years as Thou shall not kill and in only this last decade and only in America has someone re-intrepreted it to say murder in the place of kill. When your religious writings don't say what you wish just re-intrepret them. It's the American way. How do you explain the part where God says worship no other God but him but then says he is the one and only God. Either there are more than one God's or God didn't know what he was saying.

21. Nice try...
Why don't you check the original Hebrew of the Torah, which modern "Christians" call the "Old Testament". The correct translation is murder. And before you accuse me re-interpreting to suit my beliefs you had better study your history a little better. What has been handed down for the last two thousand years has been modified world wide to suit the political needs of the ruling class at that time. If you want to understand the teachings you should return to the original documents and do a correct translation. You should also include all writings of the period and not just those that suit the needs of those seeking to control.

"How do you explain the part where God says worship no other God but him but then says he is the one and only God. Either there are more than one God's or God didn't know what he was saying."

Wonderful use of logic, not. What the writings are saying, right or wrong, was that the people of the time were worshiping many different God's and that the one true one was YHWH.

22. That's also the part where God says
he is a jealous God. Now I always understood jealousy as a character defect exhibited by those who deep down inside feel that they are now worthy of being loved. Now that just doesn't sound like much of an omniscient god to me.
