UN Mediator to Leave Colombia After Failed Talks
BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - The United Nations (news - web sites) will suspend its mediation efforts between the Colombian government and Marxist rebels after two years of talks that have failed to resolve the country's 40-year conflict, U.N. officials said on Monday.

U.N. special advisor James LeMoyne, who since 2001 has tried to move Colombia toward a peace settlement, is set to leave his post in April, the officials said.
...
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, more than two years in office, sees the rebels as terrorists and insists they must lay down their arms before any peace process can start.

The U.N. mission's suspension may make it more difficult for Uribe to drum up support for his program of demobilizing and rehabilitating Colombia's far-right paramilitary groups. These groups started in the 1980s as militias set up by landowners to protect their property from the guerrillas.
