Indiana GOP Governor (Mitch Daniels) Proposes Tax Hike
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana's new Republican governor is doing what he said he would do — laying out the details of his plan to erase the state deficit. But not everyone, including members of his own party, is on board.

When Gov. Mitch Daniels (search) was campaigning, he pledged to balance the budget. But during his first state of the state speech last week, Daniels surprised voters by proposing something he long stressed would be a last resort.

"I ask the most fortunate among us, those citizens earning over $100,000 per year, for one year, to pay an additional 1 percent on the income they receive," he said.

Daniels concedes the proposal startled members of the Republican-controlled Legislature, partly because of his prior employment as President Bush's (search) budget director.

11. No he is cutting programs
he wants to cut education, which he said he would not do. He wants to privatize the pensions out here just like Bush with Social Security. He wants to get rid of the Board of Registered Nursing. He is planning more tax cuts for his next budget. Arnold is doing to CA what Bush is doing to the U.S.

4. Where's Grover Norquist When You Need Him?
My God. Why does this republican hate America and God so much? After all, didn't Jesus preach "no millionaire left behind".

But I thought we had to cut these rich peoples taxes so that the crumbs would fall down to us "regular" folks. Oh well, at least he's not encouraging queers to vow their love for each other.

<sarcasm off>

13. Grover and the rest of the Tax Cut Monkeys are mad about this.
It was one of the topics of the weekly republican strategy meeting Grover holds every Wednesday. The Tax Cut Monkeys have organized a campaign to oppose any tax increase in Indiana.

8. Fantastic
I have got to give this guy credit and applause for this decision. Common sense is common sense, whether there's an "R", a "D", or otherwise after your name.

9. What else can he do
Like that famous line "I rob banks because that's where the money is" If he wants to balance the budget he needs money and that means he must go where the money is. It is against everything Republicans stand for because it is truth. They live in a total fantasy land and sometimes are forced to come back to reality and this is one of those instances. The budget can not be balanced any other way and sustain itself.

10. Love the inflamitory headline, Faux...
Implying that it's the folks making LESS than $100,000 a year who'll get their taxes raised - - since most folks never get past the headline, this will get any and every Republican opposed to Daniels and his evil plan...

12. He is also
pushing to lower the kindergarten age. This is huge for Indiana considering that we do not have mandatory kindergarten and the Republicans are dead set against full day kindergarten because of the cost!

Anyway, the article still implies that he has no choice because of condition of our state. Daniels blames Kernan (former Governer) for everything. This is just one more thing to blame him for. :eyes:

16. He could be a typical Republican and cut school lunches for poor kids
or get rid of programs that help the middle class. I applaud him for thinking not like a Republican or Democrat but as a good Governor.
