Rabbi At NYC Gay Synagogue Censured

The Rabbinical Assembly of Conservative Judaism Wednesday censured the associate rabbi of New York's Beth Simchat Torah in what many in the LGBT congregation see as an attack on the very core of their synagogue.

With more than 800 members it is the largest gay synagogue in the country. Although Beth Simchat Torah is not part of the Conservative movement it is closely follows its principals in the Jewish law.

Rabbi Ayelet Cohen was given an internship at Beth Simchat Torah while she was a rabbinical student at the Jewish Theological Seminary. When she graduated in 2002 the synagogue created a full time position as assistant rabbi for her.
