BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier from the 101st Airborne Division, based in the northern region of Mosul, has died of gunshot wounds.

1. Wounds? Non-hostile gunshot wounds?
That's their story and their sticking to it.

The Iraqi police died of non hostile gunshot wounds as well.

12. If it were a suicide
would it not be a noble thing to keep it from the media?

Don't get me wrong. I don't think this misadministration does anything noble. But it could easily be a suicide. I think giving the family time to be notified and come to terms with it before the press gets a hold of it might be just a wee bit considerate.

18. I agree in principle
The problem with this gang of thugs is that this is the only announcement of the death you will ever see.

4. Another suicide...
Bush wrecked alot of lives to pursue his PNAC agenda. I bet few people in the national guard ever imagined that an unelected American leader would start war after war.

7. Suicide or
'fragging' or 'accidental discharge' (gun went off, I didn't mean for it to).

Since there is no announced investigation and they didn't say it was an accident, I'd bet that it was a suicide.

Another needless death. My heart goes out to the man's family.

11. I Don't Trust The Army Investegators
Army investegators discovered a GI at Ft Knox a couple of years back with 23 stab wounds; they ruled it a "suicide."

13. Sounds like Navy Investigators
Remember USS Iowa? They found the dead suicidal homosexual enlisted man responsible in less than 24 hours.
They never did find the bomb he supposedly used. Nor any real evidence that he was homosexual, or suicidal. And they seemed to gloss over the parts about how the Commanding Officer and Weapons Officer were using unauthorized powder loads, or how the crew was not properly trained in the equipment...

14. at first glance, i'd agree, BUT-
as much as i'm aquainted with suicide (too much sorry to say)...it strikes me as odd that the article speaks of MULTIPLE shots- not, one -
Most people only get the chance to shoot once- that shot disables them from finishing off a 'bad' aim...

Also, lost in the article is the number of "non-combat" deaths... 117 people- are they any less dead than the 'combat' ones? Who is the military fooling, other than fools ?

Too sad, way too sad.

8. Any idea about how many suicides
there have been? I know this isn't the first one. Can you imagine feeling so trapped, depressed and scared that taking your own life would be the preferable option?

BTW, I'm deducing suicide based on their lack of details. If it was a fellow soldier, I'm thinking someone would have been charged.

21. Soldier's commentaries have disappeared...
...from the news ever since that flurry of dissent among the ranks leaked out a while back and was subsequently crushed by lord Rummy. Who really knows just how far moral has sunk? I'll bet most of them are experiencing a form of traumatic stress disorder, what with being forced to exist in such a hellish situation and not being allowed to tell anyone in the outside world about it.

6. What I believe is happening here
We have a bunch of frustrated young men soldiers and some young woman soldiers. Frustrated young men tend to get into fights over young women. They all have loaded weapons handy. "I saw the way you looked at my woman! Bamb!"

9. That's 295 that we know of
Since this whole mess began. I'm going to quit differentiating between march and may, hostile/nonhostile. Dead is dead and if fucknutz* had listened to the "focus groups" there would be 295 americans still alive and countless others wouldn't be wounded and separated from their families, if this chimpanzee hadn't pulled the pin on the hand grenade that pnac gave it.

I'd like to build a flip chart sign and put it in my yard and everytime another American died for this moron's* oil lust I'd turn a number over. I'd like to get pictures of dead american soldiers in iraq and paste them onto gas pumps, just so people know the real price of the fuel they're pumping.

19. Other possibilities:
Was shot by a homeowner during one of the celebrated home raids looking for contraband or Saddam sympathizers.

"Friendly fire" by a member of the Iraqi police force.

But, I'll bet it was a fragging. Just saw Platoon again and was reminded of the horrors of war. Both Physical AND psychological. These kids went in there expecting a quick in and out like GWI.

22. Not necessarily a suicide
There are a LOT of accidental shootings with troops running around locked and loaded all the time. In Somalia, the closest I got to getting killed was by a medic cleaning his .45 cal pistol. The round hit about 1 foot from my abdomen.

24. suicide or not...
...I'm really sad for his family. When I was in Iraq, a soldier I knew died under similar circumstances. At first it was announced that he commited suicide but later they said he was cleaning his weapon and not knowing that there was a round in a chamber, put a weapon to his head and fired. I don't know how belieavable this is, but the guy had a wife and two kids waiting for him back home.

26. Wouldn't suicide be caused by the war its self?
The stress, the thigs that they're forced to do, to witness. The constant on edge. When is it my turn to have my ass fly past me in a humvee.
