ASSAD WARNS MIDDLE EAST STATES FACE BREAK-UP THREAT

Turkey warns U.S. to prevent Kirkuk from falling under Kurdish control

Compiled by Daily Star staff

Syrian President Bashar Assad warned the current turmoil in the Middle East is exacerbating ethnic differences which could lead to the break up of some countries in the region.

Speaking to RIA Novosti news agency at the end of his four day state visit to Russia Assad said: "The events in the Middle East could lead to the break-up of several countries in the region, the rise of extremism and religious and ethnic strife."

He added: "This could produce a domino effect that could spread to your region."

His comments will be seen as a barely concealed reference to Iraq and the growing sectarian tensions between the various religious and ethnic groups in the country in the wake of the US-led invasion and occupation.

Assad's remarks come as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Thursday that the United States will bear the consequences of ethnic turmoil in Kirkuk if it fails to prevent the oil-rich city in northern Iraq from falling under Kurdish control.

2. Bush is pushing us into WWIII
Well yeah that has always been the plan. At the center of the Neocons ideology is the concept of a winnable nuclear war. That's just the path that has to be followed if the US is going to be the world leader.

Come on, get with the plan.

5. How true

People forget that the scumbags who are in power today espoused the doctrine of a winnable nuclear war against the Soviet Union, with its thousands of warheads. To them, the nuclear option is not merely a deterrent, it is a mean of actively achieving strategic goals.

4. Iraq probably SHOULD be broken up...
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 11:40 PM by GainesT1958
Into Sunni, Shi'ite, and Kurdish sections. What's wrong with an independent Kurdistan, sombody tell me? We could work out a deal with Turkey for a "right of return" for Kurds living there to the new Kurdistan; we'd have a Moslem nation as a staunch ally of the U.S.; it would have plenty of oil and hydroelectric power, as well as rich, fertile soil for agriculture--unlike the desert portion of Iraq. They could even chose to use the Euro as their currency.

The Sunnis and Shi'ites in central and southern Iraq, meanwhile, need to be seperated into distince nations in order to prevent a wider regional war--one the Neo-Cons would be all too willing for us to jump into feet-first. THEN we could have elections for each nation.

Why do we want to avoid the inevitable--when agreeing to it might even make it more likely that we'd have al that oil a lot quicker, and a lot less of our soldiers and Marines killed? What a concept!:eyes:

B-)
