Saddam Purportedly Heard On New Tape
Saddam Purportedly Heard On New Tape

POSTED: 8:37 a.m. EDT September 17, 2003

CAIRO, Egypt -- Another purported Saddam Hussein tape has turned up on an Arab satellite station.

Al-Arabiya has aired what it says is an audiotape of the former Iraqi dictator. The voice calls on Iraqis to step up their resistance to coalition forces in their country.

And it urges the U.S.-led forces to leave Iraq immediately -- saying there is "no reason" for Americans to suffer more "disastrous" losses.

1. My first thought
Was that this was the unearthing of some old Beatles tape from their Quarrymen days, and Saddam was sitting in on drums, providing backing vocals or something.

Why yes, I would like another cup of coffee, thanks.

Pardon the interruption. Please give this story the serious attention and due consideration it deserves.

3. Another take with more details:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A new audiotape purporting to carry the voice of ousted dictator
Saddam Hussein was broadcast on Arab television Wednesday, demanding that U.S.
troops withdraw from Iraq and saying that their defeat is inevitable.

The speaker on the tape also called on Iraqis to join the resistance against the U.S.-led
occupation and take to the streets in protests.

Addressing the Americans, the speaker said, ''Your withdrawal from our country is
inevitable. And tomorrow is not too far away.'' He told the United States to negotiate its
withdrawal with Iraqi leaders it holds captive.

The voice said the tape was recorded in mid-September, though there was no way to verify
that claim or the tape's authenticity.

4. You'd think with all the money Saddam & bin Laden
have, they could come up with some better video and audio equipment? It does make one wonder, when you look at the crappy quality of the tapes that have aired. Christ, my teenaged daughter has better equipment than these guys!

7. Did you see the palaces the soldiers went into? . . .
Everyone expected to find lavish, expensive, top of the line television and stereo equipment and all they found were a bunch of old black and white TVs. Iraq is still in third world status with equipment. That's why the WMD thing is such a joke if you really think about it. Anything they might have had would have had to come from another country.

6. more tapes.... can our black-ops guys think of something new?
the 'tapes on Al Jazeera' routine gets old after awhile, ya know?

Hey Bush, if Saddam can smuggle tapes around like this, what's stopping him from passing around a few of those vials and cannisters you can't fucking find? Maybe he took them with him when the bombs started falling?

Jon Stewart said it best "I've said it before... do they think we're retarded?"

11. Here On The Arab Street People Think Saddam Is About To Get Serious
Sorry no link or concrete evidence just the words of the Arabic street. Oman remains largely apolitical as it is a "good friend" of the Bush admin but my lefty leaning Muslim pals think Saddam is going to seriously ratchet up the heat.

They believe the Republican Guard is intact and are going to jump in full force.

God, Allah, Ponds Cold Cream help us.

I think they may be right and this is going to get really fucking messy.

Just a thought to ponder.

13. Eh, I dunno.
I'm more worried about the Shiites,
who are mostly "keeping their powder dry"
so to speak, and waiting to pick up the
pieces.

What the ex-RG are doing is what they need to do,
forming up again would just give the occupying forces
something to bomb.

It is really fucking messy already, but far from as bad
as it could be, so ...

You do have to wonder where's Saddam and what's he up to?,
but he has never shown any real signs of military ability,
the Iran war was depressing and unimaginitive in every way,
so I don't expect much now.

Thanks for the input, in any case.

12. Rumor has it that Saddam sings on this one
It's in Arabic, but translates roughly to:

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
