Hispanic Caucus Declines To Endorse Gonzales Nomination
http://www.drudgereport.com/flash4.htm

Interesting. Rather than pride over his nomination, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus is saying "Thanks, but no thanks"

Scarcely the type Latino-gratitude bushie was expecting I'm certain! Good for them!

3. That's terrific. Kudos to them.
It must be very disappointing to them to have to oppose the appointment of the first Hispanic for that position, and it is great testimony to their sense of values that they put humanity over ethnic or cultural issues.

Justice for all.

30. It's good defense
when the Repugs call us "racist" (ironically) because we don't support him.

8. another link: Hispanic Lawmakers Rally Against Gonzales
January 27, 2005

Hispanic Democrats in the US Congress rejected Alberto Gonzales as nominee for attorney general, breaking with major US Latino groups.

In a letter to Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus said Gonzales had not taken the time to meet with the group to discuss "issues important to the Latino community."

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday approved Gonzales' nomination after Democrats grilled him on the White House legal counsel's role in shaping US policy on interrogating terror suspects.

His confirmation must be cleared by the 100-member Senate, which has only two Hispanic senators -- one Republican and one Democrat

21. He believes they should accept the fact he's just too damned busy.
He's a busy, busy guy, working hard to help Bush destroy civilization as we have known it. He'll be a co-creator in New Bush World!

"The historic nature of his nomination is rendered meaningless for the Hispanic community when the nominee declines an opportunity to meet with the group of Hispanic members of Congress who have worked for so many years to open the doors of opportunity to fellow Hispanics," the caucus said in the letter sent Wednesday.
(snip)
Thanks to these great people for standing firm.

12. I am...
Latino (of Mexican descent) and I don't approve of him--but overall I don't approve of torture and lies. He shames us! I'm glad they're not supporting him. I see this as Bush's usual play up the race card. Republicans really don't like Latinos anyways.

I too am proud of the Hispanic Caucus for not endorsing his nomination. It shouldn't be about race or color but who's best for the job.

And there are thousands of Hispanic service people serving in Iraq right now. It is important that the Hispanic Caucus take that into consideration.

I am white, but that does not mean I would vote for * , not the best analogy, I know. Though I was very excited by the prospect of an Al Sharpton as President. It all comes down to what is right.

28. Me, too. But the nomination is nefarious because
by finding criminals that belong to a minority (gender, color, race, religion) they can always play that card.

Pendejos.

So the republicans can cease and desist with their "democrats are persecuting Gonzales because they're racist" meme.

20. Are you sure about that?
Moreover, are you diminishing the importance of their decision just because "they are all democrats"? If they were all republicans, what would you post?

34. It's pretty easy to spot someone with an agenda and things like saying
that all members of a certain organization are against some nominee "because they are all democrats" is a good, but not firm indicator. Since I never capitalize repug, unless writing to a public forum, like the newspaper, online TV forums, etc. (and it really bothers me to have to do so), I knew where the idea of noncaps was coming from and that is disrespect, contempt, for that party. I was so nervous when I was first posted here but I really am a liberal and I prefer to treat others, even those I totally disagree with, with respect, I have had few problems. I am sure it will be the same for you.

33. Hispanic groups divided over Gonzales' nomination
BY FRANK DAVIES
Knight Ridder Newspapers

<snip> Melvyn Montano, the first Hispanic adjutant general in the Air National Guard, said he opposes Gonzales' nomination because, as White House counsel, "his interpretation of law on the Geneva Conventions was very wrong and put our troops at risk." <snip>

"I reluctantly have to ask: If these (prisoner) abuses primarily victimized Latinos instead of non-Latinos, would Latino groups be so united in their support?" said Cueller, a professor at Stanford Law School. <snip>

"I respect Judge Gonzales' inspiring personal story," Montano said. "But given his record, senators who are afraid to vote against him for fear of being labeled `anti-Hispanic' are doing themselves and their constituents a grave disservice."
