Roberts says insurgency will continue, questions Iraqi democracy

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Iraqi insurgents are likely to continue attacks after elections, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts said Friday. He also questioned whether American intervention can create democracy there.

Roberts, R-Kan., said he is concerned that majority Shiites, who make up 60 percent of the population, will dominate the new Iraqi government after Sunday's balloting and the new government will form an alliance with Iran, where Shiites also are in the majority.

The senator said he expects that insurgents "will not let up," particularly if Shiite turnout is high and Sunni turnout is low. Under former President Saddam Hussein, Sunnis dominated politics; Sunni insurgents are battling U.S. and Iraqi forces.

"I don't think you can lay down democracy in a country in rocky soil like so much Astroturf," Roberts said.

4. No Pat. You Don't Get to Jump Wagon Now. You Cheered For This War.
No, Senator Roberts. You ridiculed those of us who questioned the war and now you want to question it after your prince has been re-elected.

Go fuck yourself.

5. Stop and think here.
We need all the help we can get. He can be useful. Use him. A repug against the war is a good thing.

9. Yeah, Pat.
Unlike the rest of them, this man might have a few I.Q. points higher. Maybe 86.9. He realizes that this whole mess is becoming radioactive.

He wants to be the first one to jump ship and be the "smart" one.:smoke:

Why am I not impressed?

8. Duh!!!!!!
I wish these guys had listened to the anti-war crowd instead of calling us a "focus group". Everyone in the world predicted Shiite domination (hello--democracy--60% Shiites v. everyone else) and Iranian influence or alliance (hello--the shiites next door).

10. Iraq Poll Won't End Violence, Say US, UK Officials
http://wireservice.wired.com/wired/story.asp?section=Breaking&storyId=982574&tw=wn_wire_story

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Violence in Iraq is unlikely to subside after Sunday's election and may well get worse before it gets better, U.S. and British officials say, a sentiment seconded by many Iraqis.

But the officials maintain the mainly Sunni Muslim insurgency against American and British troops and their Iraqi government allies is cracking and will be defeated in time.

In the run-up to Sunday's poll, expectations have been widespread for a spike in Iraq's regular fare of suicide bombs, mortar attacks and shootings.

Activity has indeed risen from 29 attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces countrywide last Saturday, to 45 Monday and 98 on Thursday. But the violence has been less dramatic than feared.

11. Are they just realizing that?
Unfortunately, I still think that the civil war I have been expecting since the US opened this can of worms is still coming. Very soon.

13. this is known as... "lowering expectations"
lower expectations... lower expectations... lower expectations...

remember last week, Cheney said something to the effect that just holding an election (regardless of how many turn out to vote, how many people would be able to vote due to the number of polling places, etc.) would be "Success"!

17. I emailed my good Senator Roberts prior to the invasion of Iraq
I also emailed Senator Sam Brownback questioning the flimsy evidence presented to the American people. I pointed to Hans Blix and the Inspectors report and the statements by Powell and Condi-lies-a that Saddam was totally contained only months before. I received the stock...we must support the President response from Brownback, but didn't even get that from Roberts. Pisses me off to no end. I told them that invading Iraq would flame more terrorists and enemies of the US. I'm just little ol' me in suburban Kansas and I could forsee it. Why the f*** couldn't they?

On a side note, my Jayhawks are looking spectacular on ESPN's College Gameday. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!
