Top Bush officials amend war claims
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 12:38 PM by shockingelk
Not that this is new new to us here, but the fact it's on WND makes it news indeed ...

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=34642

"Yeah, I did misspeak .... We never had any evidence that he had acquired a nuclear weapon," said Cheney, known for his careful choice of words.
...

"Zarqawi is actually the guy I was referring to – should have been more precise," Wolfowitz said Friday. "It's not a great many – it's one of bin Laden's key associates – probably better referred to that way than a key lieutenant."

...

Lytle: "On March 30th you said, referring to Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, quote, 'We know where they are.' Do you know where they are now? Will they be found?"

Rumsfeld: "In that instance, we had been in the country for about 15 seconds; sometimes I overstate for emphasis .... I should have said, 'I believe they're in that area'" around Tikrit and Baghdad.

...

"'Overstated for emphasis'? That sounds like something out of Clinton's mouth -- 'I didn't actually lie, I overstated for effect,'" said a senior GOP staffer, who added that Republican leaders fear the administration may be losing some of the reservoir of public credibility and trust it gained after the 9-11 attacks.

2. I love it
sometimes I overstate for emphasis

It is my new excuse. I can lie whenever I want and all I have to do is say, "Sometimes I overstate for emphasis."

In literature we call it hyperbolizing. In politics, it is called misleading the people.

5. If you want to call it that
It seems like a pretty pathetic attempt to me, given how "emphatic" the assertions were of "possession" of WMD's and "direct ties" to al-Qaeda . So what they're admitting is that all of the reasons for invading Iraq, with all of the present and future consequences, was a sham? I see some interesting fractures appearing in the PNAC facade here. Any of the media or dems want to get on a bulldozer and drive through one?

6. misspeak - misspoke - overstated -
To take (one thing) in error for something else is the easy way out of saying I lied!

So now they claim they didn't indeed know, oh' my aching ass.
