BAGHDAD, Iraq There are fears that militants may disguise themselves as police officers to launch attacks on voters tomorrow in Iraq.

Militants have vowed to disrupt the national election and have launched continuous attacks on political targets in the run up to the vote.

The British media pool reports hundreds of uniforms are missing in Basra, Iraq's second largest city, and may be in the hands of insurgents. It says insurgents could use the uniforms to make it easier to slip through checkpoints.

Meantime, militants continue to attack polling centers around the country. Voting sites in at least eight cities have come under attack.

1. we have no idea of truth in this occupation --- does Negronte want "true
democracy" --- my guess is no. That's why he is there. Check his record in Honduras.

2. Leftchick, thanks for posting all these articles.
Nothing like starting off your Saturday morning with some invigorating anger and disgust. It's like sometimes I wonder why I bother arguing with the Bushbots about Iraq and other issues and this reminds me. Thanks. :hi:

5. and I woke up late!
Tomorrow will be awful and I just might not dare look. I actually got the nerve up to ask a repuke neighbor why he votes repuke and what about Iraq last week. He just shook his head and said Iraq is a mess and didn't want to talk about it.

peace
:)

10. Of COURSE not!
He knows now he was wrong. Of course, it's far too late to change his vote now, isn't it?

12. He was clueless about PNAC, neocons etc.
He said he had know idea what I was talking about. I said the neo-cons are driving US foreign policy and they pushed and got their war in Iraq. It boggles my mind. This fellow reads the NYTs and the WSJ. I know the word "neo-con" pops up on occasion even in those places.
Scary.

13. Good work! It's important that we keep the PNAC front and center!
Remember...the truth is our most valuable weapon!

6. Or the uniforms could have been given to the oppostion .......
...... by the police themselves. Either because of threats or that they support
the other side too. bush now has us smack dab in the middle of hell.

Great Editorial from the site One Thousand Reasons .......

This War is Yours

The ill-conceived, poorly planned, and illegal war against Iraq has turned undeniably sour. Even though elections will be held in two days, no one expects democracy to flourish or American troops to leave any time soon. And the cost has already been enormous: 1,400 dead Americans, an estimated 100,000 dead Iraqis, and $200 billion of US taxpayer's money.

And what has been achieved? Did George Bush get rid of those dangerous weapons he promised we would find? Oops, guess the UN was right. Guess Scott Ritter was right. No weapons, no danger, no mushroom clouds, no aluminum tubes, no connections with terrorists. Nothing but a sad old man, a brutal dictator for sure, but absolutely no threat to Americans.

Who is to be held accountable for the carnage? Who will take the blame for our huge deficit, created in part to finance Bush's war of choice? Who will apologize to the thousands of friends and family members of the soldiers? Who will stand up and admit that it was all a mistake, an overzealous attempt at revenge for 9-11?

Not George Bush. According to him, he had his little "accountability moment" on November 2, 2004 when voters -- 51% of them -- sent him back to the White House.

Perhaps he's right. Perhaps it was you, the slim majority of Americans who approved of his policies, who must now shoulder the blame. Someone has to. This is a bad war, an illegal war, and someone has to pay. And don't you dare send the bill to me or the other 49% of the country who tried in vain to show you the folly of George Bush.

No, this war is yours. Those of you who claim moral superiority to us god-forsaken liberals who dare fiddle with the sanctity of marriage, who dare suggest that a woman has a right to decide when to have children, who dare place science in our children's school books, who dare argue for peace. Superior, indeed.

Maybe you will come to your senses, admit your guilt, and throw Bush out of office. Maybe you will begin to see that morality is more than mere Bible thumping.

Saddam back to the palace, so what.

Stupid is as stupid does.... America has been way too dumbed down by the Compliant News Networks. Shame on them.

9. Good point. Except that by doing so, they put themselves in danger.
At first I was going to comment that I think the Iraqi police have the best interest of their country at heart, and then I remembered that police tend to be authority-type figures and maybe they're just jockeying for a position of power when the occupation leaves. Think of the bribes they can impose on the people, think of the intimidation against those who once intimidated them.

I don't trust anyone's motives anymore. Four years of bush, and I'm ten times more cynical than I was at the end of the Clinton era.

14. I suspect the insurgents will be going after US bases
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 02:10 PM by Barrett808
Wire up the suicide bombers, cover them with police uniforms, send them into some of the forward operating bases...while the US and Iraqi forces are distracted protecting the 9,000 -- no, 5,800 -- no, 5,000 --- polling places...

15. This is going to be ugly
The uniforms will be the magic key to penetrate the lines of defense tomorrow. This is a clever and patient enemy and we had absolutely no reason to pick a fight with him.

Mr. Bush's debacle marches on...

16. You are exactly right
I whole-heartedly agree with every single word you wrote. Especially "This is a clever and patient enemy..." These are the words that should strike fear in the hearts of all Americans, even those of us who were deadset against this invasion.
