Updated: 1:07 p.m. ET Jan. 29, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket hit the U.S. embassy inside Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone on Saturday, killing two people and wounding at least six, a diplomatic source said. NBC News reported that the embassy is in lockdown.

The rocket struck after dark on the eve of Iraq’s elections. An explosion could be heard across the city center and sirens sounded in the Green Zone shortly after the blast. A U.S. embassy official confirmed the blast.

Cable news (CNN?) was just now saying it was a mortar.

Which means it was probably a suicide bomber.

Rocket Hits U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A rocket hit the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Saturday, the eve of Iraq (news - web sites)'s landmark elections, officials said. An embassy spokesman said there appeared to be casualties.

The U.S. military said an explosion at the site was being investigated. A senior State Department official said a rocket hit the embassy, which is located in the heavily fortified Green Zone area of the capital.

Embassy spokesman Bob Callahan confirmed the embassy had been hit in an attack, but could give no details.

"There appear to be some casualties, but we don't know yet. We're looking into it," he said.

19. It's updated now
Embassy spokesman Bob Callahan confirmed the embassy had been hit in an attack and said there appeared to have been casualties, but could give no details.

The second official then confirmed that two had been killed and four injured.

I guess Callahan's still looking into it.

23. msnbe reporter missed the point of the question-She was asked
Do you think Iraqi people will be more scared now to go out and vote?

She responded that people inside the zone have felt less vulnerable than people outside this 'heavily fortified area"

I think that this blast did indeed make a big statment--they can attack this "heavily fortified zone"--then they can attack anywhere --and people outside this zone know it!!

Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 02:52 PM by Neecy
That a prime reason for this heavy weaponry being employed against Americans and Iraqis alike is our failure to secure ANY weapons dumps when we stormed across the border? Does he mention that our rush to surround the Oil Ministry and engage in sham PR stunts like tearing down statues kept us from securing the very weapons that allow these attacks to become so 'routine' and 'everyday'?

No, because that would be oh, so critical of our incompetent leadership. Nothing here to see - just death.

Anyone want to bet that the american embassy in Bagdad will be effectively destroyed before this fiasco is over?.

Every mortar shot and every rocket launch gives them another point in their aiming for the embassy. One wonders if they actually do have the range now.

Deadly attacks mark countdown to elections

Two die in rocket attack on U.S. Embassy in Baghdad

'A rocket attack hit the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone today, killing a U.S. military member and a civilian, U.S. sources said. The embassy attack followed two earlier bombings that killed at least eight people at a U.S.-Iraqi military center. Iraqi officials said that voting in Sunday's elections will foil the terrorists."

....But violence continued, even in the heavily fortfied centre of Baghdad where two Americans died in a rocket attack on the US embassy compound.

At least four people were wounded in the Saturday night attack, inside the so-called Green Zone.

"It hit near the embassy building," spokesman Bob Callahan said. "There are two dead and four who are wounded... all Americans."

It is not clear if the casualties were embassy employees.

The PNAC has given BushCo marching orders--MORE FODDER
http://www.newamericancentury.org/defense-20050128.htm

They want Congress to increase end strength for the military services. The money quote: Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution places the power and the duty to raise and support the military forces of the United States in the hands of the Congress. That is why we, the undersigned, a bipartisan group with diverse policy views, have come together to call upon you to act. You will be serving your country well if you insist on providing the military manpower we need to meet America's obligations, and to help ensure success in carrying out our foreign policy objectives in a dangerous, but also hopeful, world.

Diverse policy views, my ass!!! Not to dumb this down, but what it means is A DRAFT. See, you can increase end strength all you want, but at the end of the day, if the all-volunteer force fails to find volunteers (and you know that will be problematic, even if they start giving them Halliburtonesque bonuses), the next step is further stop losses, recall of all retirees under the age of sixty five, shifting of assets between services, with retraining (so you get a bunch of desk jockeys from the USAF, who are sent to learn how to shoot and go on patrol, and who are seconded, as a unit, to the Army or the USMC--too bad if that isn't what you signed up to do, oh, well!!!), and when that fails to plug the holes (as it will), here comes the "targeted draft."

I'd start with the NRA Youth membership list, myself.....

Why the hell did McCaffrey sign this POS?
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 04:00 PM by Clark2008
I very much respect Gen. Barry McCaffrey and it concerns me that the PNAC has roped this honorable man into signing this.
I surely hope his reasons are pure - like the protection of our troops by building up their numbers, but it disturbs me to see his signature there, among all those corporate whoring assholes.

Sorry if I'm late on this. I hadn't read the entire letter, just the reports on it.

51. He has always been a Republican
He did the war on drugs nonsense for Clinton because he needed an "in" after his retirement. And Clinton was no fool--he carefully selected moderate GOP types for jobs to insulate himself (eg Bill Cohen of Maine, married to Janet The Democrat Langhart). He came to the public consciousness in a big way under a Democrat, but make no mistake, he hasn't changed at all. I am not surprised at all by his association with this nonsense.

my! How "democratic".

The delegates are to scared to put names and policies out in public, and the people are somehow expected to make real choices and vote?

Get a grip "sweetbutterfly" - the occupation has not freed anyone except those we killed. Otherwise we have Saddams playbook covered - rape rooms for men, women and children. Torture, secret arrest, being held without charges. Hmmmm - and think - Saddam at least was able to give physical security, electricity, and the basic services unlike the US today.

"freedom" - do you really believe THAT is what we have wrought with our shock and awe in Iraq?

69. nice try sweetie, but the best description for those attempting
to overthrow an illegal occupation by a foreign government which advocates torture and "disappears" civilians into gulags outside of any pretense of legal oversight - by definition these citizens of Iraq ARE Freedom Fighters.

Saddam was a bastard, but by and large more people are suffering under bush & company than did under Saddam. Saddam didn't flatten the city of mosques. He didn't bomb large sections of his own country with depleted uranium and leave bomblettes lying around to rip apart children who see the bright yellow balls as "toys" to pick up.

46. They will report
a high turnout and everyone will declare it a great success.

"Mission accomplished' ... again.

But the "multinational forces" will be asked to stay on for the rest of this century or whenever the oil runs out, whichever comes last.

1. They will just stuff the ballot boxes
No need to let them go to waste and they have to do something while they are waiting for the non-existant voters to show up in their "undisclosed locations" polling places.

It will be a big sucess for blivet** and his crew. They should just declare the winner now and stop the bloodshed.

47. Earlier this week Bush commended those brave enough to vote. It'll be
such a shame if he's disappointed by a poor turnout.

Bush stands ready to praise those who would die in bringing his vision into reality.

55. I have heard reports of missiles hitting the Green Zone...
...which had been fired from several miles away. I am glad I don't live in or around the Green Zone.
