Texas lawmakers cancel trip to Mexico amid safety alert

BROWNSVILLE, Texas A group of 25 state lawmakers canceled a visit today across the border to Matamoros, Mexico, because of safety concerns.

The senators and representatives instead met with Mexican officials at a reception in Brownsville.

On Wednesday, the U-S State Department issued a travel advisory alerting citizens of recent drug-trafficking and kidnapping violence on the Mexican side of the border.

The lawmakers, who were in the middle of a four-day tour of the Rio Grande Valley, had planned to shop in Matamoros and meet the city's mayor and the governor of Tamaulipas at a dinner reception there.

2. "Do as we say, not as we do"
Lawmakers won't go but they tell the rest of us it's ok? And what will these lawmakers be doing when one of us is kidnapped and killed...sit around and say "we told you so"??

Although the lawmakers decided to stay in Brownsville, Oliveira said Mexico is still a safe destination.

"It was a very highly publicized dinner that we were going to be at with the governor," Oliveira said. "If somebody wanted to do something stupid or cause some attention — it would have been an obvious place to do it."

Meanwhile, the United States and Mexico on Saturday tried to defuse a spat over the U.S. alert about drug gang violence along the border.

They issued a joint statement in which Washington said its announcement was not meant to keep Americans from traveling south of the border.

3. That is an easy one
Don't know them, it really sad. Poor sould should have listened to the the US warnings.

After that, the lawmakers will go back to their daily lives, trying to out Dems in the state legislator and screw with the state social services again.
