Kevin McGuire vows to push through with his agenda (neo-nazis in Montana)
Kevin McGuire vows to push through with his agenda

By ERIN NICHOLES Chronicle Staff Writer

Kevin McGuire came to Bozeman for an education.

"I wanted to go to college," at Montana State University, McGuire, 22, said this past week during an interview. "I've always wanted to move to Montana."

The California native arrived last fall with two goals: study civil engineering at MSU and recruit members for the National Alliance, a West Virginia-based group seeking a whites-only, non-Jewish society.

"That's all I want," McGuire said.

McGuire brought the alliance to Bozeman. He is responsible for racist fliers distributed in Bozeman, Belgrade, Manhattan, Three Forks and Livingston. He organized the alliance's 13-person opposition to a diversity rally that drew more than 1,000 people to downtown Bozeman in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

1. I predict his education won't go well.
Even in Montana, it is likely that the civil engineering program is fairly diversified.

I bet his classmates give him hell.

2. He is actually not allowed on campus
Further down in the article:

He was arrested Jan. 19 at MSU for handing out alliance literature after a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration.

"We have a no solicitation policy on campus," said MSU Assistant Police Chief Donna LaRue. "We don't allow anybody to hand out leaflets or pamphlets without approval."

McGuire was warned for trespassing and told not to return to campus; he would have to go through an appeals process to enroll as a student, LaRue said.

National alliance to be taken seriously

By ERIN NICHOLES Chronicle Staff Writer

The National Alliance is not to be taken lightly, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a Montgomery, Ala.-based organization that tracks racist groups.

"It's one of the more serious hate groups we've seen in many, many years," said center spokesman Mark Potok. "They are certainly the leading neo-Nazi group in America."

The West Virginia-based group wants a white-only, non-Jewish society and has been recruiting here since June 2004. It wants educated people with money whose appearances are not stereotypically white-supremacist, Potok said.

6. I'd bet...
that his parents are racists! Otherwise, it would be hard to imagine someone so young believing that.

10. It's the price we pay for our own free speech.
If it's any consolation, Bozeman, Belgrade, Manhattan, Three Forks and Livingston Montana are not exactly big markets for ideas of any kind.
