CITGO: Hi-tech Houston Hospital medicine for low income Venezuelans

Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) US subsidiary, Citgo has announced that it will start a program to attend citizens in Venezuela needing medical attention.

Citgo president, Luis Marin says his company has signed an agreement with the Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston (Texas) to attend Venezuelans from low income sectors, using the latest medical technology.

"It is part of Citgo's social responsibility to open a beneficent fund to guarantee specialized medicine costs ... we are thinking of signing an agreement with the Anderson Hospital as a second stage of our policy ... the Hospital specializes in the treatment of cancer."

1. Well I thought this was pretty cool...
This is what democracy looks like (democratic socialism). Venezuela (Chavez) demands help for his people from the oil companies, if they want his oil!

4. Citgo is run by the Venezuelan government.
It's a wholly owned unit of the Venezuelan state oil company.

7. It's a sub of the Venezuelan state oil company.

Venezuela nationalized their oil industry back in 1990.

Petróleos de Venezuela = Venezuelan state oil company

Note, this isn't a bad thing. It's just what they did. It appears to work well.

8. I guess I am misunderstanding the article...
If Citgo is a US owned sub of Petroleo (Ven) and is helping the people of Venezuela, isn't that pretty much saying that if they (Citgo) want the oil they have a responsibility to help the people? That's the way I am reading it. The people are going to Houston (USA) for the medical treatment also.

That's the point I was trying to make.

9. Citgo is the sub that sells to US citizens. It's not US owned.
It can't be US owned if it's a subsidary of a corporation that is owned by the Venezuelan government.

Simpler terms, maybe:
Citgo is a corporation owned by
Petróleos de Venezuela which is a corporation owned by
the Venezuelan govenment.

In short, the Chavez administration is using profits from oil sales in America, made through Citgo, to help the people of Venezuela.
