Webb drops out of race for DNC chairmanship
Former Denver mayor backs Dean
By Susan Greene
Denver Post Staff Writer

Monday, January 31, 2005 -

Wellington Webb dropped out of the race to chair the Democratic National Committee today and endorsed former Vermont governor Howard Dean for the job.

Webb, a former three-term Denver mayor, pulled out of contention immediately after an influential group of state Democratic Party chairpeople overwhelming supported Dean, a 2004 presidential candidate who promises to rally the "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party."

Also today, Colorado Democratic Chairman Chris Gates backed Dean after stumping for Webb for more than a month.

"Howard Dean has been a thoughtful advocate for progressive change, both as governor of Vermont and as a candidate for president. And I think he'll make a great national party chair," Gates said.

5. I don't want to get prematurely excited...
...but it would leave a smile on the faces of me and my kids to see Dean chair. A bit of light in an otherwise dark dark time.

Even better, he DOESN'T have to go "head to head" with the mainstream media. He can bite them on the the ass with the "Dean Scream" because anything negative they say will just prove that they're shilling for Bush!

7. More good news!
Perhaps there will be a silver lining in our collosal national defeat in November after all: a party determined to stand for something and to win elections by doing so.

11. WOW! Webb is a good man to have on your side
I was impressed with his speech Saturday on the Chair candidate's panel on CSPAN.

I also noticed that Kerry stated on Meet the Press this weekend he did NOT think Dean was too liberal for Chair.

I think Dean is going to get it.

24. Webb impressed me, too. I thought Fowler had some good things
to say, but I think Dean can take us where we need to go and beyond.

13. Hmm...I seen to recall you
thinking the Clintons were going to undermine Dean. Looks like someone was listening a little too much to Dick Morris. Dean is getting the chairmanship because he's the first coice of those who have a vote. It's that simple. No conspiracies for or against. :)

14. I REALLY hope to be wrong about the Clintons and any
back stabbing that I perceived to be going on!!! I believe I tempered my comments with 'conspiracy theory' as my beloved husband tells me I see conspiracy behind the mailman putting the charitable request envelopes on top of the bills to be paid.

Reading all the morning news about the Fowler mix-up with the ASDC made my heart sink until the actual vote took place and Dean prevailed. I was getting ready to scream ESTABLISHMENT WHORES.

I will now go to my happy place and be quiet for a while! :hi:

Howard Dean Rocks :yourock:

15. Webb was one of the best candidates and I happy that he supports Dean
Dems have a long way to go to rid themselves of their own hypocrisy.

16. Okay, I'm getting nervous now.
Everything seems to be shaping up our way, but then I've seen that happen enough times in the last four years to know that things will go sour at the last minute.

18. Me too- but Webb turned out to be my 2nd choice so this is happy news
I don't even know how I feel about not having Dean out and unencumbered, but I'm trusting him to keep being Dean :D

21. Deaniacs be careful!!
This happened to Dean before, he builds so much momentum that a backlash takes place. I want Dean as DNC chair but I don't like all this "state's unanimously back Dean" etc stories because it could lead to a bigger ABD campaign.

22. Okay, but the ASDC voted
well 96 Chairs/Vice-Chairs voted at 56 of them voted for Dean, which gives him the endorsement and the request of the Chair of Chairs for all State Chairs and Vice Chairs to vote for Dean. It's not like it's a joke...this endorsment could equal 112 of the 447 votes (or of the 224 Dean needs to win the DNC Chair)
