Four Iraqi detainees killed, six injured in riot at detention facility in southern Iraq

http://www.boston.com/dailynews/031/world/Four_Iraqi_detainees_killed_si:.shtml

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) U.S. guards opened fire Monday on prisoners during a riot at the main detention facility for security detainees, killing four of them, the U.S. command said. Six other prisoners were injured.
The riot broke out shortly after noon at the Camp Bucca internment facility near Umm Qasr in southern Iraq after a routine search for contraband in one of the camp's 10 compounds, the command said in a statement.
''The riot quickly spread to three additional compounds, with detainees throwing rocks and fashioning weapons from materials inside their living areas.'' the statement said. ''Guards attempted to calm the increasingly volatile situation using verbal warnings and, when that failed, by use of non-lethal force.''
''After about 45 minutes of escalating danger, lethal force was used to quell the violence,'' the statement added.

Just another day in the US commonwealth of Iraq…..

5. Prison riot in Iraq, U.S. soldiers kill 4
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 05:16 PM by Cocoa
I guess at least one "celebration" got out of hand.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aIrLnrZudNRY&refer=us

Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. soldiers in Iraq shot and killed four inmates during a riot that spread through a prison in the far south of the country, a military spokesman said by telephone from Iraq.

Almost 3,000 prisoners rioted at Camp Bucca early yesterday afternoon after guards began a search for contraband, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Barry Johnson said. After ``45 minutes of escalating danger,'' guards opened fire, Johnson said. No soldiers were hurt in the uprising.

The violence spread through four of 10 compounds at the detention facility, according to a U.S. military statement.

``The situation is back to normal, calm,'' Johnson said. ``Certainly the guards are still aware of tensions in camp as a result of having to use force.''

6. Contradictory statement:
"The situation is back to normal, calm," Johnson said. "Certainly the guards are still aware of tensions in camp as a result of having to use force."

I guess the prisoners haven't heard the good news about Iraq being a shining beacon of democracy yet.

12. Correct your headline.
It should read: "U.S. guards LIBERATE 4 detainees in Iraq riot"

You can thank me later for pointing that out.:D

13. This is how we do it in Arkansas
"After about 45 minutes of escalating danger, lethal force was used."

We use the lethal force before it spreads to
other camps and we leave out the verbal warnings
and the nonlethal tactics as well (in the interest
of time saving)

Why is this even a story-NO, I can't do this
sarcasm anymore- this is insane.

And how many of those inmates have seen the inside of
a court room. I keep reading about large numbers
of Iraqis being rounded up. I guess this is one
of the places they're kept-camp bucca

15. The msm needs to watch themselves...
they are giving counterproductive messages to the propaganda they vomit. If there were so few Iraqis left in detention, then how could this one facility hold 10 compounds? I'd be hard pressed to believe that there are only several hundred detainees in a facility with 10 compounds.

18. If Iraq is a "sovereign" nation
then why are thousands of Iraqis being held w/o charges by a completely alien occupying military force?

Maybe Dubya can explain to me what this new fangled definition of sovereignty is.
