Cornwall is overly influenced by the Catholic church and its rural (solidly right-wing) and American (aforementioned NY Whimmies) neighbours. It's a shame for such a fate to befall a city in such close proximity to Montreal.

BTW, my LINO MP voted in favour of the Alliance anti-same-sex marriage bill, but I have no idea how he voted on this bill.

5. I'd love to meet him too...

I'm far more ambivalent on Israel-Palestine than he is, but he and Layton will likely give them my federal vote next year, especially in light of the Sampson Scandal. (My step-dad will likely continue being an Orange Tory (Socially liberal, but definitely not an Orchard-style Red TINO) and the rest of my family will almost certainly stay Liberal.)

8. It's all a conspiracy...

The purpose is to send the Repugs into further fits of apoplectic rage. Consider in the past six months:

No troops to Iraq w/o the UN, if then.
Decriminalized marijuana possession
Government supplied medical marijuana (lousy stuff, by all reports, and way overpriced)
Gay marriage legalized provincially and soon nationally
And now hate crime protection for gays!

Somebody in Ottawa must have the gleeful job of coming with new and different ideas like this--WHAT COULD BE NEXT?

Here's another article about the vote on same-sex marriage yesterday in Canada. This is excellent, as it contrasts the two prevalent attitudes in the country about the subject. For you Americans, the provinces that are most against it are the conservative (same as Repug) ones.
