MoD 'did not need Kelly's permission' to name him

Ministry of Defence personnel chief told the Hutton inquiry today that he did not think the ministry needed weapons expert David Kelly's permission to make his name public.

Richard Hatfield said that when he spoke to Dr Kelly on 8 July he had seen a Q&A document prepared for press office inquiries about the source of the BBC report on the 'sexing up' of the Government's Iraqi arms dossier.

James Dingemans QC, counsel to the inquiry, asked:"The question and answer material has three drafts?"

Mr Hatfield replied: "I know that now."
